INTERMITTENT SCRAPING SOUND FROM REAR OF 2009 ACCORD LX-P <20,000 MI. INCREASED FREQUENCY OVER TIME. TOOK TO THE DEALER WHERE PURCHASED WHO REPLACED BOTH REAR BRAKE PADS (OLD PARTS NOT AVAILABLE) AND RESURFACED BOTH REAR ROTORS FOR A COST OF $250 - DECLAIRED NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. INTERNET RESEARCH AND NOTIFICATION OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR THIS REAR BRAKE FAILURE INDICATES THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR SPECIFIC HONDA AND ACCURA MODELS. I CONTEND THAT HONDA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE THEY HAVE DEVISED (BUT NOT DELIVERED TO DEALERS AS YET) A REPLACEMENT SET OF BRAKE PADS. ALSO THIS IS INDEED A SAFETY PROBLEM SINCE BOTH REAR BRAKE PADS WERE AT ZERO PAD LIFE REMAINING AND ROTORS WERE DAMAGED PER THE DEALER SERVICE TECHS. THAT MEANS TO ME THAT MY ACCORD HAD ONLY 1/2 THE DESIGNED BRAKING ABILITY WHICH WAS ENGINEERED FOR THIS CAR - MAKING THE CAR UNSAFE IN ANY EMERGENCY BRAKING SITUATION. *TR

UPON LEASING A 2009 HONDA ACCORD I NOTICED AN AUDIBLE SQUEAKING SOUND EMITTED BY BOTH REAR BRAKES. THIS SOUND IS CLEARLY HEARD WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND VEHICLE'S SPEED IS BELOW 25 MILES PER HOUR. I RETURNED TO DEALER AND WAS REASSURED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR NEW BRAKES ON HONDA ACCORDS AND THAT OVER TIME THE SOUND WOULD STOP. AT THIS POINT, THE CAR WAS AT LESS THAN 1,000 MILES. I CURRENTLY HAVE 22,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR BRAKES ARE WORN TO 2 MMS. SIMILARLY FRONT BRAKES ARE PREMATURELY WORN AND ARE MEASURED AT 6 MMS. AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THOUSANDS OF OTHER CUSTOMERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING AN IDENTICAL PROBLEM WITH THE 2008-2009 HONDA ACCORD BRAKING SYSTEM. HONDA IS OFFERING A REPLACEMENT OF REAR BRAKES, BUT CANNOT GUARANTEE WHETHER THIS WILL SOLVE THE ISSUE. *TR

MY FIANCE' PURCHASED A 2009 HONDA ACCORD EX 4 DOOR SEDAN. SHE COMPLAINED ABOUT A MONTH AGO THAT SHE STARTED HEARING A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL COMING FROM THE REAR. SHE HAD ABOUT 19K MILES ON IT SO I WAS BEWILDERED WHAT IT COULD BE SAYING IT CAN'T BE BRAKES SO IT MUST BE A BEARING PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WHERE HE REPORTED I NEEDED BRAKES. HE SAID "HONDA ADMITS THEY MIGHT HAVE AN ENGINEERING PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES WITH PREMATURE FAILURE, BUT WON'T ADMIT IT." SERVICE REP STATED THAT THE PADS ESPECIALLY IN THE REAR ARE FAR TOO SMALL TO HANDLE THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR SO THEY WEAR ESPECIALLY FASTER THAN OTHER VEHICLES. HE STATED THEY DID A MODIFICATION BY ADDING A STEEL SENSOR SO THE OWNER KNOWS WHEN THEY ARE GETTING LOW. HE WOULDN'T ADMIT THAT BEFORE THE MODIFICATION, THERE WERE NO SENSORS ON THE BRAKES PEOPLE WOULD BE METAL TO METAL AND NOT KNOW IT BECAUSE OF THE EXTREMELY LOW MILES OF WEAR. ONLINE REPORTS PUT BRAKE FAILURES FOR THIS MODEL STARTING FROM 2008 ANYWHERE FROM 14K TO 21K. SEE YOUR OWN SITE HERE: HTTP://WWW.LEMONLAWCLAIMS.COM/HONDA%20ACCORD%20BRAKE%20PROBLEM.HTM QUESTION IS: IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TOYOTA'S CURRENT SAFETY ISSUES, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO CALL HONDA FRONT AND CENTER TO ADDRESS THEIR CAVALIER ATTITUDE TO THIS ISSUE? HONDA'S CATATONIC MOVEMENT ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE IMPLIES THEY ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH REVENUE FOR REPAIRS THAN SAFETY FOR IT'S OWNERS. THIS IS GOING ON NOW FOR 2 MODEL YEARS! WHEN I LEFT THE DEALER, I STILL HEARD A SQUEAL WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. I WENT BACK AND TOOK THE TECHNICIAN WHO DID THE BRAKES FOR A TEST DRIVE. HE SAID I NEEDED THE FRONT'S REPLACED TOO. THAT IS OVER $400 FOR BRAKES AND THE CAR IS ONLY 1 YEAR OLD. ONCE AGAIN, HONDA IS MORE CONCERNED OVER REPAIR REVENUE THAN PASSENGER SAFETY. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM BRAKE FAILURE IN LATE MODEL HONDAS? FYI: THERE WAS ANOTHER WOMAN WAITING IN THE DEALER LOUNGE WITH ME... HER 2009 ACCORD HAD 19K MILES AND SHE WAS TOLD SHE NEEDED BRAKES ON ALL 4 WHEELS. *TR

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

The original ASIC was susceptible to a moisture ingress issue due to inadequate ASIC passivation layer.Water ingress could result in moisture reaching the Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer in the ASIC causing corrosion and breakage of electrical circuits. The damaged ASIC then causes failures of the SRS module resulting in 1) incomplete boot-up when power is supplied to the module or 2) the inability of the module to establish either internal or external bus communications. In either case the air bag readiness indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated and all air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled.During the investigation, ODI obtained the SRS module from a complainant crash vehicle where the air bags did not deploy despite a significant frontal impact. An inspection of the module was performed at a Continental facility. The inspection confirmed that the module had the ASIC fault thus preventing the SRS module from completing the boot-up process. An attempt was made to recover stored EDR data from the module however none was present; this outcome is consistent with an Atmel ASIC failure.A second SRS module alleged to have the ASIC problem was inspected during the same visit. This second module was unable to communicate with the test equipment. The ASIC was replaced on this module and full function was restored to the module confirming the ASIC as the cause of the SRS module fault.According to Honda, tier-two Atmel implemented three different corrective actions in early 2008.Implementation of the corrective actions into module production by tier-one Continental, and into vehicle production by Honda resulted in three distinct vehicle populations. The first population consists of certain non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords with modules that did not contain any of the corrective actions. This population of 341,444 vehicles exhibited a significant level of module failure in service and is thus being recalled. The second population of 382,693 non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords contained two of the three corrective actions. This population exhibited a significantly lower level of SRS module failure, compared to the first population, but a marginally higher level compared to the third population.Honda is conducting a 15 year unlimited mileage extended warranty program for this second population.Under the program Honda will replace the SRS module free of charge for vehicles that experience an SRS module malfunction due to ASIC failure.Owners eligible for the extended warranty will be notified by Honda in writing. The third population consists of vehicles containing all three corrective actions, this population exhibits a normal level of SRS module failure.Based on the safety recall and extended warranty this investigation is closed. The VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at SaferCar.gov under the following identification numbers: 10871612, 10869953, 10810554, 10788238, 10781994, 10778712, 10765025, 10761583, 10759019, 10758622, 10747850, 10735806, 10734761, 10733519, 10715339, 10703521, 10676517, 1065
