THIS IS KNOWN AS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION THAT FORCED TOYOTA TO RECALL THEIR CALLS AND NOW IS HONDA'S TURN TO DO THE RIGHT THING BEFORE ANYONE DIES. *TR

ON TWO OCCASIONS IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS, MY 2009 HONDA ACCORD EXPERIENCED WHAT I WOULD DESCRIBE AS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT A LOW SPEED (FIRST TIME TURNING ON TO A ROAD; SECOND TIME ACCELERATING WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK THE VEHICLE). THE ENGINE SURGED WITH POWER AND NEARLY REDLINED THE TACHOMETER. EACH CASE I SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL TO DISABLE THE DRIVE TRAIN AND THEN SHUT DOWN THE CAR; WAITED FIVE MINUTES AND RESTARTED THE CAR. I SCANNED THE NTSB DATA BASE TO LOOK FOR SIMILAR REPORTING BUT FOUND NONE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED, IN 2014, FROM A HONDA DEALERSHIP, WITH ONLY 15440 MILES ON IT. I DROVE IT WITHOUT INCIDENT FOR AT LEAST NINE MONTHS. I NOW HAVE ABOUT 25500 MILES ON IT. I ALSO OWN AN OLDER ACCORD AND CONSIDER THEIR VEHICLES TO BE QUALITY PRODUCTS. I AM NOT TREATING THIS AS A COMPLAINT AS MUCH AS I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE IF SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED. UNLIKE THE RECENT TOYOTA ISSUES OF FLOOR MATS INDUCING ACCELERATION, THE MAT I USED IS SECURED TO THE FLOOR OF THE CAR AND DOES NOT COME WITHIN THREE INCHES BEHIND AND BELOW THE VEHICLE'S ACCELERATION PEDAL. OF NOTE, THIS MODEL VARIANT IS POWERED BY A 4-CYLINDER ENGINE. GIVEN THE INFREQUENCY OF THIS; I AM WONDERING IF THIS IS A SOFTWARE GLITCH IN THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER COMMAND MODULE. *TR

I HAVE HAD MY HONDA ACCORD 2009 V6 SERVICED FOR CONSTANT SPARK PLUG FOULING AND OIL CONSUMPTION. AFTER A TOTAL OF 10 VISITS, AND OVER 40 DAYS WITHOUT MY CAR OVER THE COURSE OF 3 YEARS, I HAD RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 3 SPARK PLUG SETS, TWO OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS, LOST TWO CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, AND O2 SENSORS. EVEN WITH THIS CONSTANT SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT, IT DID NOT ALLEVIATE ANY ISSUES. I KEPT BREAKING DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH A RUMBLING, MISFIRING ENGINE. AFTER NUMEROUS TRIPS TO HONDA, THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. AFTER SPEAKING TO A DISTRICT REP AND BEING REFERRED TO PARAGON HONDA IN WOODSIDE, NY, THEY HAD AGREED TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. THEY HAVE NOW HAD IT FOR TWO MONTHS. AFTER RECEIVING A NEW ENGINE, I INSTANTLY RECEIVED CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS STATING THE CAR WAS RUNNING TOO LEAN. AFTER RETURNING IT FOR ANOTHER WEEK, I RECEIVED IT BACK, BUT THIS TIME, IT WOULD LITERALLY CHOKE OUT AND STALL AT EVERY OTHER RED LIGHT. I RETURNED TO HONDA WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FOR TOO RICH AND A CAR THAT WOULD NOT MAKE IT MORE THEN A FEW MILES IF STOP SIGNS WERE INVOLVED. IT HAS NOW BEEN THERE FOR TWO WEEKS, ON TOP OF THE TWO MONTHS. PLUS THE 40 DAYS, THAT'S A TOTAL OF 4 LOST MONTHS. I HAD TO FIGHT THIS WEEKEND FOR A LOANER CAR, WHICH FOR THEM, SEEMED LIKE A VERY DIFFICULT THING TO DO. HONESTLY, I DON'T KNOW HOW THE NHTSA HAS ALLOWED HONDA TO KEEP THEIR OIL CONSUMING DANGEROUS CARS ON THE ROAD, I HAVE BROKE DOWN IN THE LEFT LANE OF A 4 LANE HIGHWAY, AND I KNOW THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. I AM A METICULOUS PERSON, WHO CONSTANTLY CHECKS HIS OWN OIL, PLUGS, FILTERS, ETC.... I MONITOR MY O2 SENSORS FOR BAD FUEL TRIMS CONSTANTLY, AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN NOTHING BUT DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS HUNK OF JUNK. I'VE FILED CONSUMER COMPLAINTS, HONDA COMPLAINTS, TO NO REGARD. *TR

THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF HESITATION BETWEEN SHIFTING GEARS UNTIL THE VEHICLE REACHES A LEVEL DRIVING SPEED. THERE IS A HARD DOWNSHIFT WHEN SLOWING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP OR EVEN JUST DECREASING THE SPEED. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT ENGINE NOISE DURING ACCELERATION UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION CHANGES GEARS. DRIVING UP A HILL FROM A STOP OR SLOW ROLL CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO BARELY RESPOND AND THE RPMS REACH VERY HIGH LEVELS BEFORE THE GEARS CHANGE AND ACCELERATION IS ACHIEVED. *TR

ENGINE MAKES WHISPERING NOISE. PULLED OVER TO FIND NO OIL ON DIPSTICK. OIL LIGHT NEVER LIT. FILLED WITH 2.5 QUARTS OIL AND WENT TO DEALER. TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO TIMING AT START-UP CAUSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION, BUT TOLD THAT A QUART OF OIL EVERY THOUSAND MILES IS NORMAL. DEALER PERFORMED RECALL SERVICE AND MONITORED OIL SEVERAL TIMES AT THOUSAND MILE INTERVALS. OIL CONSUMPTION ABOUT A QUART EACH TIME AND TOLD IT IS NORMAL. VEHICLE WENT OUT OF WARRANTY AND MONITORING STOPPED. VEHICLE NOW AROUND 50K MILES AND OIL CONSUMPTION NOW MUCH GREATER THAN 1 QUART PER THOUSAND MILES. I MUST CONSTANTLY MONITOR AND ADD OIL. HONDA RECENTLY HAD A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT FOR 6-CYLINDER VEHICLES FOR EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION. HOWEVER, BASED ON ONLINE RESEARCH THERE APPEARS TO BE MANY OWNERS OF 4-CYLINDER ENGINES THAT ALSO HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS. CLEARLY HONDA KNEW/KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT HAS FAILED TO ADDRESS IT. IN ADDITION TO THE EXTRA COST OF OIL, I'M SURE THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE. THE VEHICLE OIL PUMP MAKES NOISE AT STARTUP AND THERE WILL LIKELY BE REPAIR COSTS IN THE FUTURE. HONDA SHOULD FIX THE CAUSE OF THE OIL CONSUMPTION. *TR

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

PE15029 · Srs Control Module Failure

Opened Aug 18, 2015 · Closed Jun 17, 2016

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control MODULE-INACTIVE

As discussed further below, and by letter dated January 22, 2016, Honda is recalling certain model year (MY) 2008 through 2010 Honda Accords to replace a defective air bag/SRS control module that can result in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) becoming fully inoperative (disabled).See NHTSA Safety Recall 16V056 at SaferCar.gov for further details.Honda's response to an agency Information Request letter indicated that the SRS module was manufactured by tier-one supplier Continental and contained a power supply ASIC manufactured by tier-two supplier Atmel. The original ASIC was susceptible to a moisture ingress issue due to inadequate ASIC passivation layer.Water ingress could result in moisture reaching the Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer in the ASIC causing corrosion and breakage of electrical circuits. The damaged ASIC then causes failures of the SRS module resulting in 1) incomplete boot-up when power is supplied to the module or 2) the inability of the module to establish either internal or external bus communications. In either case the air bag readiness indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated and all air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled.During the investigation, ODI obtained the SRS module from a complainant crash vehicle where the air bags did not deploy despite a significant frontal impact. An inspection of the module was performed at a Continental facility. The inspection confirmed that the module had the ASIC fault thus preventing the SRS module from completing the boot-up process. An attempt was made to recover stored EDR data from the module however none was present; this outcome is consistent with an Atmel ASIC failure.A second SRS module alleged to have the ASIC problem was inspected during the same visit. This second module was unable to communicate with the test equipment. The ASIC was replaced on this module and full function was restored to the module confirming the ASIC as the cause of the SRS module fault.According to Honda, tier-two Atmel implemented three different corrective actions in early 2008.Implementation of the corrective actions into module production by tier-one Continental, and into vehicle production by Honda resulted in three distinct vehicle populations. The first population consists of certain non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords with modules that did not contain any of the corrective actions. This population of 341,444 vehicles exhibited a significant level of module failure in service and is thus being recalled. The second population of 382,693 non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords contained two of the three corrective actions. This population exhibited a significantly lower level of SRS module failure, compared to the first population, but a marginally higher level compared to the third population.Honda is conducting a 15 year unlimited mileage extended warranty program for this second population.Under the program Honda will replace the SRS module free of charge for vehicles that experience an SRS module malfunction due to ASIC failure.Owners eligible for the extended warranty will be notified by Honda in writing. The third population consists of vehicles containing all three corrective actions, this population exhibits a normal level of SRS module failure.Based on the safety recall and extended warranty this investigation is closed. The VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at SaferCar.gov under the following identification numbers: 10871612, 10869953, 10810554, 10788238, 10781994, 10778712, 10765025, 10761583, 10759019, 10758622, 10747850, 10735806, 10734761, 10733519, 10715339, 10703521, 10676517, 1065
