MY 2009 HONDA ACCORD HAS A GRINDING NOISE THAT OCCURS WHEN THE IGNITION IS ACTIVATED FROM A COLD START. THE NOISE LASTS FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO SECONDS AND SOUNDS LIKE THE TIMING BELT SYSTEM IS RATCHETING INTO PLACE. THIS ONLY OCCURS ON A COLD START, MEANING THE ENGINE HAS NOT BEEN RUNNING FOR 4 OR MORE HOURS. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR OVER A YEAR. AN INTERNET SEARCH LOCATED HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN 09-010 DATED 08/17/10 AND THEN UPDATED ON 10/21/11. THE SAFETY BULLETIN DESCRIBES THE VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL (VTC) ACTUATOR AS BEING, "DEFECTIVE". ADDITIONAL INTERNET SEARCH IDENTIFIED THAT THE GRINDING NOISE WAS COMMON WITH THE 2009 ACCORD. I SPOKE WITH MY DEALER, HUGH WHITE HONDA, COLUMBUS, OHIO. THE DEALERSHIP AGREED WITH MY DIAGNOSIS AND NOTED THAT HONDA WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT HAD NOT ISSUED A RECALL ON THE VTC ACTUATOR. FURTHER, THE DEALER NOTED THAT HONDA ISSUED A 2011 SOFTWARE UPDATE ON THE 2009 ACCORD TO ADDRESS COMPLAINTS OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. A SEPTEMBER 2011 NOTICE FROM HONDA IS TITLED "PRODUCT UPDATE: SOFTWARE UPDATE TO IMPROVE FUEL-INJECTOR AND VTC TIMING" THE NOTICE STATES THAT THE FUEL INJECTOR TIMING AND VTC TIMING AT COLD START MAY CREATE DEPOSITS ON THE OIL CONTROL RINGS THAT COULD CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION." THE DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THAT MY CAR HAD THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. THE DEALER ARGUES THAT THE UPDATE IS SEPARATE FROM THE CURRENT GRINDING NOISE AND THAT THE VTC ACTUATOR HAS FAILED. THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY MY GRINDING NOISE APPEARS TO HAVE STARTED AFTER THE 2011 SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS COMPLETED. BASED ON THE FOREGOING, I AM FORWARDING THIS COMPLAINT. I BELIEVE THERE IS SOME EVIDENCE TO INDICATE THE VTC ACTUATOR IS DEFECTIVE AS BEING NOT SUITED FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. *TR

THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH THE V6 ENGINE THAT HAS VCM (VARIABLE CYLINDER MANAGEMENT). I HAVE READ SEVERAL DIFFERENT REASONS FOR THE PROBLEM AT HAND BUT, THE CAR IS CONSUMING FAR MORE OIL THAN IT SHOULD. FROM THE CONSUMING OF THE OIL IT IS ALSO CAUSING SPARK PLUGS TO FOUL. THERE ARE TONS OF FORUMS ONLINE WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT AS WELL AS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT THAT WAS FILED SOMETIME IN 2012. FROM EVERYTHING I HAVE READ FROM RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, HONDA EITHER DENIES THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE, SUPPOSEDLY INSTALLS SOME COMPUTER UPGRADE THAT DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, TELLS PEOPLE THEIR ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REBUILT, IS TOLD THEY NEED TO RUN A DIFFERENT TYPE OF OIL, OR LIKE MYSELF WAS TOLD THAT IT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL FOR THESE ENGINES TO CONSUME 1 QUART OF OIL PER 1000 MILES DRIVEN. ITS SEEMS AS THOUGH THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE VALVES OR VALVE SEALS SEALING OFF COMPLETELY. IT IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM YET HONDA IS NOT DOING ANYTHING TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. *TR

DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT 55 MPG NOTICED VIBRATION COMING FROM ENGINE. FELT LIKE ENGINE MOUNTS HAD FAILED. WHEN I PULLED INTO OUR HOME DRIVEWAY IT FELT LIKE I WAS DRIVING A DIESEL POWERED CAR. I NOTICED OIL LIGHT GLOWING. CHECKED OIL LEVEL, NOTHING SHOWED ON DIP STICK. UNDER 3000 MILES SINCE LAST OIL CHECK. TOOK TO DEALER AND COMPLAINED. CHECKED FOR OIL LEAKS-NONE. FLASHED ENGINE MANAGEMENT WITH UPGRADE SAID SERVICE BULLETIN FROM HONDA SHOULD FIX ISSUE. KEPT CHECKING OIL LEVELS AT EACH GAS FILL UP. NOTICED A QUART OF OIL USED AROUND EVERY THOUSAND MILES OF MIXED DRIVING. BY 50,000 THAT HAD DROPPED TO USING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 600 MILES AND BY 56,000 MILES A QUART OF OIL EVERY 500 MILES. ENGINE RAN ROUGH ALL THE TIME AND BLEW SMOKE. NO VISIBLE ENGINE LEAKS FROM DYE TEST. ENGINE OIL WOULD TURN BLACK WITHIN 1000 MILES AFTER AN OIL CHANGE AT DEALER. DEALER INSTIGATED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST EVERY 1000 MILES. USED 2.5 QUARTS OF OIL. AT 58,000 MILES DEALER RECEIVED PERMISSION TO REPLACE MOTOR WITH NEW SHORT BLOCK FROM HONDA AND REMANUFACTURE HEADS WITH ALL NEW PARTS. THIS WAS AFTER DEALER TORE DOWN THE MOTOR AND CONFIRMED IT WAS SHOT. SCORED BORE AND DESTROYED RINGS, AND BLACK OIL SLUDGE IN MOTOR. ENGINE OIL HAD BEEN REPLACED AT DEALER WITHIN HONDA RECOMMENDED INTERVALS. NEVER HEARD OF A HONDA MOTOR FAILING AT 58,000 MILES IN MY LIFE. NEW MOTOR RUNS GREAT AND CAR IS LIKE NEW AGAIN. I'M GLAD THE ENGINE FAILED WITHIN THE 60,000 DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO REPLACE IF HONDA DID NOT COME THROUGH WITH A NEW ENGINE. READING ON THE INTERNET THAT THIS IS AN ALL TO COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2008, 2009 4CYL ENGINES. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL OF THESE ENGINES, AS IN THE 2011 MODEL YEAR HONDA UPGRADED ENGINE PARTS AND THE NEW MOTORS DO NOT DISPLAY THE SAME PROBLEMS AS I EXPERIENCED WITH MY ENGINE. *TR

A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.

Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

PE15029 · Srs Control Module Failure

Opened Aug 18, 2015 · Closed Jun 17, 2016

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control MODULE-INACTIVE

As discussed further below, and by letter dated January 22, 2016, Honda is recalling certain model year (MY) 2008 through 2010 Honda Accords to replace a defective air bag/SRS control module that can result in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) becoming fully inoperative (disabled).See NHTSA Safety Recall 16V056 at SaferCar.gov for further details.Honda's response to an agency Information Request letter indicated that the SRS module was manufactured by tier-one supplier Continental and contained a power supply ASIC manufactured by tier-two supplier Atmel. The original ASIC was susceptible to a moisture ingress issue due to inadequate ASIC passivation layer.Water ingress could result in moisture reaching the Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer in the ASIC causing corrosion and breakage of electrical circuits. The damaged ASIC then causes failures of the SRS module resulting in 1) incomplete boot-up when power is supplied to the module or 2) the inability of the module to establish either internal or external bus communications. In either case the air bag readiness indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated and all air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled.During the investigation, ODI obtained the SRS module from a complainant crash vehicle where the air bags did not deploy despite a significant frontal impact. An inspection of the module was performed at a Continental facility. The inspection confirmed that the module had the ASIC fault thus preventing the SRS module from completing the boot-up process. An attempt was made to recover stored EDR data from the module however none was present; this outcome is consistent with an Atmel ASIC failure.A second SRS module alleged to have the ASIC problem was inspected during the same visit. This second module was unable to communicate with the test equipment. The ASIC was replaced on this module and full function was restored to the module confirming the ASIC as the cause of the SRS module fault.According to Honda, tier-two Atmel implemented three different corrective actions in early 2008.Implementation of the corrective actions into module production by tier-one Continental, and into vehicle production by Honda resulted in three distinct vehicle populations. The first population consists of certain non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords with modules that did not contain any of the corrective actions. This population of 341,444 vehicles exhibited a significant level of module failure in service and is thus being recalled. The second population of 382,693 non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords contained two of the three corrective actions. This population exhibited a significantly lower level of SRS module failure, compared to the first population, but a marginally higher level compared to the third population.Honda is conducting a 15 year unlimited mileage extended warranty program for this second population.Under the program Honda will replace the SRS module free of charge for vehicles that experience an SRS module malfunction due to ASIC failure.Owners eligible for the extended warranty will be notified by Honda in writing. The third population consists of vehicles containing all three corrective actions, this population exhibits a normal level of SRS module failure.Based on the safety recall and extended warranty this investigation is closed. The VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at SaferCar.gov under the following identification numbers: 10871612, 10869953, 10810554, 10788238, 10781994, 10778712, 10765025, 10761583, 10759019, 10758622, 10747850, 10735806, 10734761, 10733519, 10715339, 10703521, 10676517, 1065
