MY 2008 HONDA ACCORD VIBRATES VERY RAPIDLY WHEN BRAKING AT HIGH SPEEDS. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT ALL FOUR BRAKE ROTORS WERE WARPED AT 29,500 MILES. I THEN CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AND TOLD THEM MY PROBLEM THINKING THERE MUST BE A DEFECT IN THEIR BRAKE PADS TO CAUSE SUCH A PROBLEM AT 20,000 MILES BUT WAS TOLD THIS IS NORMAL "WEAR AND TEAR" AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT MY SITUATION. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST VEHICLE I HAVE BEEN THE OWNER OF AND HAVE PURCHASED MANY HONDAS BEFORE AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A BRAKE PROBLEM AT 20,000 MILES LET ALONE ONE THAT SHOOK THE CAR SO VIOLENTLY THAT I THOUGHT I WOULD LOOSE CONTROL AND HAVE A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND MANY 2008-2010 ACCORD OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND ARE BEING TOLD THE SAME THING FROM THEIR HONDA DEALERS AND AMERICAN HONDA. BUT IT SEEMS THE REAL PROBLEM IS HONDA'S NEW "ORGANIC BRAKE PAD" THAT HEATS UP SO MUCH THAT IT WARPS THE BRAKE ROTOR WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE; THIS IS WHY HONDA JUST CAME OUT WITH A NEW REPLACEMENT BRAKE PAD MADE FROM DIFFERENT MATERIAL FROM THE ORIGINAL. *TR

I HAVE A 2008 HONDA ACCORD AND DRIVE ABOUT 22,000 MILES MAINLY HIGHWAY A YEAR. AT 20,000 MILES MY REAR BRAKES WENT OUT A YEAR AFTER PURCHASING. I WAS TOLD I MUST HAVE DROVE W/THE PARKING BRAKE ON AND BRAKES WERE REPLACED. NEXT, AS TIME WENT ON MANY OTHERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND DEALERSHIPS WERE AWARE AND AGREED THIS WAS AN ISSUE BUT HONDA WASN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE NOW REPLACED MY REAR BRAKES A SECOND TIME AND CALLED AMERICAN HONDA I HAVE 42,000 MILES THIS TIME. I WAS TOLD DUE TO THE HIGHWAY MILES I'M GETTING MORE OUT OF THE BRAKES THEN INTENDED. THE BRAKES ARE WORKING UP TO SPECS IS WHAT WAS SAID BUT ALSO SAID THAT HONDA KNOWS THIS ISN'T RIGHT FOR THE CUSTOMER OR FOR WHAT A HONDA BUYER IS EXPECTING BUT THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE. I WAS HEADING TOWARD THE MOUNTAINS OF CHATANOOGA WHEN I WAS GOING TO HIT THE MARK FOR REPLACEMENT. I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR AND HAVE THE BRAKES GO OUT. I THOUGHT TO REPLACE THEM BEFORE THE NOISE I'D HEAR JUST IN CASE I WAS ON THE MOUNTAINS. I TOOK THE CAR IN AND MY ROTORS WERE EFFECTED EVEN THOUGH I HADN'T HEARD ANY SIGNAL NOISE YET AND THE REAR BRAKES NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE DEALERSHIPS APOLOGIZE AND ADMIT THEY'VE BROUGHT THIS TO HONDA'S ATTENTION BUT NOTHING IS DONE ABOUT IT. I COULD HAVE BEEN ON THOSE MOUNTAINS WITH IT GOING OUT BUT LUCKILY I KNEW ALREADY IT WAS A POSSIBILITY AND CONCERN. FOR ME, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKES YEARLY. IT IS STILL CHEAPER THAN ME BUYING A NEW CAR IN THIS ECONOMIC TIME BUT AWFUL TO BUY A TRUSTED NAME LIKE HONDA AND HAVE THIS SAFETY CONCERN EACH YEAR THAT A COMPANY IS AWARE OF BUT WON'T FIX OR TAKE ON THE COST OF REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS HANDLED IN THIS YEARS MODEL BUT DON'T KNOW THAT FOR SURE. NO ONE IS THINKING AT 20,000 MILES THEIR REAR BRAKES MIGHT GO OUT WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT I HOPE WILL BE ADDRESSED. I WAS TOLD TO SEND MY COMPLAINT HERE BY A SERVICE MECHANIC AT HONDA BECAUSE HE SAID HE KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE NOT BEING ADDRESSED. *TW

2008 HONDA ACCORD LXP 4 CYL. AUTO PURCHASED 9/23/2007. PRODUCT/ MANUFACTURING/ENGINEERING DEFECT IN REAR BRAKES - PREMATURE REAR BRAKE WEAR. REAR BRAKES REQUIRE NEW PADS AT APPROXIMATELY 22,000 TO 24,000 MILES. CONSUMERS ARE UNKNOWINGLY DRIVING CARS UNDER WARRANTY WITH REAR PADS BELOW SAFETY LEVEL. NEITHER THE DEALERSHIPS OR HONDA ARE ALERTING CUSTOMERS TO THE PROBLEM. THEY'RE WAITING UNTIL THE CUSTOMER HEARS A SQUEALING NOISE INDICATING METAL IS RUBBING AGAINST METAL, TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE REAR BRAKES ARE WORN. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT. THE: DEALERSHIPS, HONDA WORLDWIDE, AND AMERICAN HONDA ARE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. I DROVE THE CAR FOR 6 MONTHS OR LONGER WITH UNSAFE BRAKES. SO ARE THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS. THE REAR PADS WERE AT 00MM AT 30,840. FRONT PADS AT 7MM AT 30,840 DEALERSHIPS ARE NOT TAKING A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO ENSURE THE CONSUMERS' SAFETY. THE BRAKES SHOULD BE CHECKED AT REGULAR INTERVALS AS EARLY AS 10,000 MILES. A CONSUMER COUNTS ON THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER TO ENSURE KNOWN EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY ISSUES ARE CORRECTED. THE DEALER AND MFR. COST FOR THE PART AND LABOR WITHOUT MARK-UPS IS $50 TO $75. CONSUMERS ARE BEING ASKED TO PAY FOR THE ONGOING REPAIRS AT A COST OF $180 - $255 INCLUDING THE MARK-UPS. CONSUMERS EXPECT THAT A NEW CAR UNDER WARRANTY WILL HAVE SAFE EQUIPMENT AND BRAKES. CONSUMERS ALSO EXPECT THAT THE HONDA DEALERSHIPS AND HONDA WORLDWIDE WILL ABSORB THE COST OF THE REPAIR. THE CONSUMER WOULD HAVE NO EXPENSE DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD AT A LOW MILEAGE WERE IT NOT FOR THE PRODUCT/ENGINEERING DEFECT. THERE SHOULD BE NO CASH OUTLAY BY THE CONSUMER. **THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND PRODUCT DEFECT ISSUE.** *TR

As discussed further below, and by letter dated January 22, 2016, Honda is recalling certain model year (MY) 2008 through 2010 Honda Accords to replace a defective air bag/SRS control module that can result in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) becoming fully inoperative (disabled).See NHTSA Safety Recall 16V056 at SaferCar.gov for further details.Honda's response to an agency Information Request letter indicated that the SRS module was manufactured by tier-one supplier Continental and contained a power supply ASIC manufactured by tier-two supplier Atmel. The original ASIC was susceptible to a moisture ingress issue due to inadequate ASIC passivation layer.Water ingress could result in moisture reaching the Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer in the ASIC causing corrosion and breakage of electrical circuits. The damaged ASIC then causes failures of the SRS module resulting in 1) incomplete boot-up when power is supplied to the module or 2) the inability of the module to establish either internal or external bus communications. In either case the air bag readiness indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated and all air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled.During the investigation, ODI obtained the SRS module from a complainant crash vehicle where the air bags did not deploy despite a significant frontal impact. An inspection of the module was performed at a Continental facility. The inspection confirmed that the module had the ASIC fault thus preventing the SRS module from completing the boot-up process. An attempt was made to recover stored EDR data from the module however none was present; this outcome is consistent with an Atmel ASIC failure.A second SRS module alleged to have the ASIC problem was inspected during the same visit. This second module was unable to communicate with the test equipment. The ASIC was replaced on this module and full function was restored to the module confirming the ASIC as the cause of the SRS module fault.According to Honda, tier-two Atmel implemented three different corrective actions in early 2008.Implementation of the corrective actions into module production by tier-one Continental, and into vehicle production by Honda resulted in three distinct vehicle populations. The first population consists of certain non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords with modules that did not contain any of the corrective actions. This population of 341,444 vehicles exhibited a significant level of module failure in service and is thus being recalled. The second population of 382,693 non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords contained two of the three corrective actions. This population exhibited a significantly lower level of SRS module failure, compared to the first population, but a marginally higher level compared to the third population.Honda is conducting a 15 year unlimited mileage extended warranty program for this second population.Under the program Honda will replace the SRS module free of charge for vehicles that experience an SRS module malfunction due to ASIC failure.Owners eligible for the extended warranty will be notified by Honda in writing. The third population consists of vehicles containing all three corrective actions, this population exhibits a normal level of SRS module failure.Based on the safety recall and extended warranty this investigation is closed. The VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at SaferCar.gov under the following identification numbers: 10871612, 10869953, 10810554, 10788238, 10781994, 10778712, 10765025, 10761583, 10759019, 10758622, 10747850, 10735806, 10734761, 10733519, 10715339, 10703521, 10676517, 1065
