SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 AND ALSO ABOUT 8-10 DAYS BEFORE THAT DATE I EXPERIENCED A GET UP AND GO WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE RPMS CLIMBED AND I HAD I ALL COULD DO TO STAND ON THE BRAKE. I WAS IN TRAFFIC AND ON A SLIGHT UPHILL GRADE (4-6%) IN BOTH CASES. THE CAR WAS CREEPING FORWARD INSPITE OF MY EFFORTS TO BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL BEFORE THE LIGHT CHANGE. THE CAR ACTED NORMALLY AFTER THAT. MY LATEST EXPERIENCE PERHAPS 100 MILES LATER WAS MUCH MORE DRAMATIC. IN THIS CASE THE ENGINE RACE WAS MORE VIOLENT AND THE CAR SHUTTERED AS I STOOD ON THE BRAKES. I BELIEVE THE WHEELS WERE SPINNING AND I WAS CREEPING UPHILL. I LOOKED DOWN TO SEE IF MY FOOT WAS SQUARELY ON THE BRAKE AS DIDN'T WANT MY FOOT TO SLIP. MY RIGHT FOOT WAS SQUARELY ON MID PEDAL. I DO NOT DRIVE WITH BOTH FEET. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT AND AM VERY SAFETY CONSCIENCE. THIS TIME I AGAIN WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. I DID SEE THE ENGINE RPM NEAR 5000 WHEN I WENT INTO NEUTRAL. I ENGINE WAS QUIET AND WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED I RETURNED HOME WITH NO PROBLEMS. I LEFT THE CAR OUTSIDE, FEARING AN INCIDENT IN MY GARAGE. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON WET PAVEMENT OR SNOW? I PROMPTLY CONTACTED MY HONDA DEALER. AFTER TWO DAYS THEY HAVE YET TO REPRODUCE THIS PROBLEM. THEY APPEAR TO HAVE NO ANSWER. THIS IS A LOW MILEAGE CAR OF LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR NOR ANY OF THE OTHERS BROUGHT THERE. THIS IS A GREAT DEALER. MY FAMILY OWNS ALSO OWNS HONDAS BASED ON OUR EXCELLENT PAST HISTORY. >>> IN SUMMARY: I NO LONGER HAVE ANY FAITH IN THIS CAR'S SAFETY. WHY DOES SUCH A DANGEROUS FAULT HAVE TO BE DEMONSTRATED BY THE DEALER? DO I HAVE TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT BEFORE THEY WILL REPLACE A SENSOR OR SOME COMPUTER CHIP? UNTIL THIS SAFETY MALFUNCTION IS CORRECTED I CAN NO LONGER ENJOY THE CAR I PAID FOR. *TR

BROUGHT THIS CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY CLAIM IT IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF A DESIGN. THE NOISE IS NOT NORMAL WHEN THERE'S A NOISE COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I WROTE AND CALLED THE AMERICAN HONDA AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING. I WAS TOLD THEY WILL INFORM THE DESIGN TEAM AND ENGINEERS ABOUT MY COMPLAINT AND THAT I SHOULD HEAR FROM THEM (I AM SKEPTICAL). *TR

VEHICLE POPS OUT OF THIRD GEAR AND ACCELERATION IS STOPPED ABRUPTLY DUE TO THIS DEFECT CAUSING A SIGNIFICANT CHANCE OF REAR END CRASHES EVERY TIME IT OCCURS. VEHICLE IS 2008 HONDA ACCORD EX V6 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT AND FITS THE CRITERIA FOR A SAFETY RECALL ON BOTH CONCERNS, I.E., "POSES AN RISK TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, AND "MAY EXIST IN A GROUP OF VEHICLES OF THE SAME DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE, OR ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT OF THE SAME TYPE AND MANUFACTURE". HONDA KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM IN 2007 CIVIC MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND IGNORED THE PROBLEM AND CONTINUED TO PUT THE DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSIONS IN THE 2008 ACCORDS AND CIVICS. FINALLY AFTER A CONSUMER DEMONSTRATION IN CALIFORNIA AND COVERAGE BY THE LOCAL MEDIA, HONDA ISSUED A HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN 08-020 THAT REPLACES THE DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION PARTS. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A MANUFACTURER RECALL BASED ON THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS LISTED HERE WHERE THE CONSUMER WRITES THAT THEY BELIEVE IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND THAT THEY WERE ALMOST INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. TOO MANY NEAR MISSES TO IGNORE. ALSO, BECAUSE IT FITS THE CRITERIA LISTED ON THIS WEBSITE FOR A LIKE DEFECT IN A "GROUP OF VEHICLES". I HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE A DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO REQUIRE HONDA TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE DEFECTIVE MODELS. WE ALL KNOW MONEY IS THE DETERMINING FACTOR AND BASIS FOR THEIR DECISION AND IF LEFT TO THEM, THEY WOULD NEVER ISSUE ONE. I AM THINKING TO BURN MY NEW HONDA ACCORD WHICH HAS LESS THAT 7000 MILES ON IT AND IS CURRENTLY AT FIRST TEAM HONDA IN CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA WITH A BAD TRANSMISSION. I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH PAYING OVER 32 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND GETTING A LEMON AND VEHICLE THAT WILL NEED TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REMOVED ALREADY. HONDA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE CONSUMER ANYMORE, ONLY THE $$$. HELP FOR A RECALL PLEASE ! I THINK I WILL CONSTRUCT A WEBSITE TO PUBLICIZE THIS TRAVESTY AND GAIN SUPPORT FOR THE BURNING OF MY HONDA. MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE HONDABURN.COM *TR

TRANSMISSION WAS LEAKING EXCESSIVE TRANSMISSIONS FLUID THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION BLOCK AFTER ONLY 1800 MILES ON A NEW 2008 HONDA ACCORD. LOCAL DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDED TRANSMISSION BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. HONDA USA CUSTOMER SERVICE DENIED RECOMMENDED TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. DEALER THEN SUGGESTED CUSTOMER CONTACT HONDA USA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO GET TRANSMISSION REPLACED. HONDA TECHNICAL SERVICE REFUSED REPLACEMENT AND WANTED A DYE LEAK TEST OVER A ONE WEEK PERIOD AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING A WIDE SPREAD CONCERN WITH TRANSMISSION LEAKAGE. CUSTOMER REFUSED ONE WEEK TEST DUE TO UPCOMING LONG DISTANCE TRIP AND LEFT VEHICLE WITH DEALER TO CONDUCT DYE TEST. DEALER CONDUCTED DYE TEST WITH ONLY 60 MILES (1 HOUR DRIVE) TO CONFIRM LEAKING TRANSMISSION BLOCK. TRANSMISSION WAS THEN REPLACED BUT ONLY AFTER NEEDLESS INCONVENIENCE TO THE CUSTOMER. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO CURRENT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AVAILABLE REGARDING THIS ISSUE? *TR

PE15029 · Srs Control Module Failure

Opened Aug 18, 2015 · Closed Jun 17, 2016

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control MODULE-INACTIVE

As discussed further below, and by letter dated January 22, 2016, Honda is recalling certain model year (MY) 2008 through 2010 Honda Accords to replace a defective air bag/SRS control module that can result in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) becoming fully inoperative (disabled).See NHTSA Safety Recall 16V056 at SaferCar.gov for further details.Honda's response to an agency Information Request letter indicated that the SRS module was manufactured by tier-one supplier Continental and contained a power supply ASIC manufactured by tier-two supplier Atmel. The original ASIC was susceptible to a moisture ingress issue due to inadequate ASIC passivation layer.Water ingress could result in moisture reaching the Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer in the ASIC causing corrosion and breakage of electrical circuits. The damaged ASIC then causes failures of the SRS module resulting in 1) incomplete boot-up when power is supplied to the module or 2) the inability of the module to establish either internal or external bus communications. In either case the air bag readiness indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated and all air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled.During the investigation, ODI obtained the SRS module from a complainant crash vehicle where the air bags did not deploy despite a significant frontal impact. An inspection of the module was performed at a Continental facility. The inspection confirmed that the module had the ASIC fault thus preventing the SRS module from completing the boot-up process. An attempt was made to recover stored EDR data from the module however none was present; this outcome is consistent with an Atmel ASIC failure.A second SRS module alleged to have the ASIC problem was inspected during the same visit. This second module was unable to communicate with the test equipment. The ASIC was replaced on this module and full function was restored to the module confirming the ASIC as the cause of the SRS module fault.According to Honda, tier-two Atmel implemented three different corrective actions in early 2008.Implementation of the corrective actions into module production by tier-one Continental, and into vehicle production by Honda resulted in three distinct vehicle populations. The first population consists of certain non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords with modules that did not contain any of the corrective actions. This population of 341,444 vehicles exhibited a significant level of module failure in service and is thus being recalled. The second population of 382,693 non-consecutively built MY 2008 to 2010 Accords contained two of the three corrective actions. This population exhibited a significantly lower level of SRS module failure, compared to the first population, but a marginally higher level compared to the third population.Honda is conducting a 15 year unlimited mileage extended warranty program for this second population.Under the program Honda will replace the SRS module free of charge for vehicles that experience an SRS module malfunction due to ASIC failure.Owners eligible for the extended warranty will be notified by Honda in writing. The third population consists of vehicles containing all three corrective actions, this population exhibits a normal level of SRS module failure.Based on the safety recall and extended warranty this investigation is closed. The VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at SaferCar.gov under the following identification numbers: 10871612, 10869953, 10810554, 10788238, 10781994, 10778712, 10765025, 10761583, 10759019, 10758622, 10747850, 10735806, 10734761, 10733519, 10715339, 10703521, 10676517, 1065
