The contact owns a 2024 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal burning odor entering the vehicle from the engine compartment. There was no warning light illuminated. Upon inspection, the contact observed that the vehicle was burning oil. The dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact expressed concerns that the issue might be related to carbon monoxide entering the engine compartment and cabin, which could pose a serious safety hazard. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 28,750.

On 15 Aug 2025, I was driving this vehicle on Rte 151 in raccoon township with my 2 children when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly experienced a “loss of propulsion” with a corresponding uncommanded shift to “neutral”. Attempts to shift the car back into drive were met with a “parameters not safe” caution. I was fortunate enough that the vehicle behind me was able to slow and an accident was avoided. The thought that this could have happened with my family on the highway, during adverse conditions, or any other scenario is frightening to say the least. Other owners of affected models weren’t as fortunate.

While driving on the interstate, I felt the engine "slip". Immediately afterwards, I heard a load knocking noise from under the hood, the check engine light came on, and the vehicle lost power. I was able to pull off the interstate. Called a towing company and got the vehicle towed to a GMC dealer. The dealership diagnosed the vehicle and noted a critical issue with the engine and transmission. Dealership recommends engine replacement. Vehicle is less than a year old with 15,400 miles on the odometer. This particular vehicle is not impacted by the GMC recall on their engine, however is has the same engine failure.

If I press on the gas petal, the car will accelerate. Never a warning, scares the heck out of you. Fortunately when this happens I have never had a car or truck behind me. If there would be a car or truck behind me, this could cause a collision for sure. No warning lights comes on. I've told the GMC dealer twice about this. Twice I was told to make another service appointment to bring my Yukon back. I was told that no service tech was available to look at this at this time.

I am the owner of a 2024 GMC Yukon Denali/AT4-T1, currently subject to GM Program #N252494000 for the L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion engine defect that can cause sudden engine failure, loss of power, and safety hazards. My vehicle has approximately 18,000 miles and is my primary mode of transportation. GM has informed me that I cannot request an immediate inspection and that they are randomly selecting affected vehicles for inspection without a clear timetable. This means I must continue driving a vehicle with a known safety defect that could fail at any moment — creating an unreasonable risk for myself, my passengers, and others on the road. My dealership has confirmed they cannot perform the inspection until GM activates my VIN in their system. No estimated timeframe has been provided. Given the severity of the defect and the potential for catastrophic failure without warning, I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate GM’s phased approach to inspections and determine whether this practice is consistent with the safety obligations under 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301 and related regulations. I also request guidance on how I can have my vehicle inspected immediately to mitigate risk. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I had just backed the truck out of a parking space (while turning) and shifted the transmission into 'Drive' with my foot pressing the brake pedal (not the gas pedal). When I took my foot off the brake pedal in order to transfer it to the gas pedal the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward without my foot ever pressing the gas pedal. The vehicle traveled forward about 20 feet before I was able to stop it by pressing the brake pedal. I am a retired General Motors Safety engineer and I know I was not pressing the gas (accelerator) pedal when this sudden acceleration event occurred. I believe this type of event occurred one other time while I was driving this vehicle. However, I am not as clear about the circumstances surrounding this previous event.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007).
