repeated mechanical failures of my 2022 GMC Sierra AT4, which I purchased on October 26, 2024, with approximately 37,000 miles on the odometer. The adaptive cruse control is wonderful when it works but I have found even with the sensor clean the truck will slam on brakes on its own causing me to nearly be rear ended. It happens when driving into the sun and at night. I no longer trust adaptive cruse and use manual cruse. Within just 55 days of ownership, and after driving roughly 4,700 miles, the vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure without warning on December 20, 2024. This failure left the truck immobilized in a highly dangerous situation—stuck in the middle of a 65-mph highway at a red light, without the ability to shift into neutral and remove the vehicle from traffic. I was forced to activate the emergency flashers and exit the vehicle, standing helplessly on the side of the road while praying that oncoming drivers would see the truck in time to avoid a potentially deadly accident. The truck was towed to the dealership the following day, December 21, 2024, where it remained for an unacceptable 110 days awaiting a replacement engine. I finally took possession of the repaired vehicle on April 10, 2025. Shockingly, only two days later—after driving just 328 miles—the vehicle suffered a second catastrophic engine failure without warning. The truck is now inoperable once again, sitting in my driveway and in need of a third engine replacement. While the odometer currently reads 42,365 miles. This ongoing situation has been not only a major inconvenience, but also a significant safety concern and financial burden. I am extremely disappointed in the reliability and performance of this vehicle. This level of failure on a vehicle that is still under powertrain warranty is simply unacceptable.

I heard a knocking noise in my engine on 4/13/25 and took it to a dealer to diagnose on 4/15/25. I had previously had to have the engine rebuilt due a collapsed lifter at 70,000 miles and I was concerned that the noise was a precursor to a repeat of that problem. Instead, the dealer informed me that problem was a failed connector rod bearing and would require a replacement engine. The service manager said my truck was not safe to drive since it could experience a sudden catastrophic failure on the highway. The truck has 80,000 miles and has been serviced at every single required interval by the original selling dealer. There was no check engine light warning.

While driving my 2022 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2L truck, it somehow turned off. I placed it on neutral and tried to turn on, but it didn’t. I maneuvered to stop at the side of the road, but I was not close enough to the curb making it uncomfortable for others to drive around. I tried again to turn on the truck, but it didn’t. Before and after everything looked good, there were no symptoms or warning lights on the truck. I gave it a break and tried to turn in the truck, but it didn’t. I called GM roadside asst., and I got towed to the closed GM Services. They found out that battery was damaged, and an open starter fuse damaged. They changed the battery, the fuse block, and did the multi-point vehicle inspection (MPVI), and everything seemed good. I picked up my truck, and on my way back home the engine stopped running. At this time I get into a left turn lane, and I was able to stop before the stop line. This time I was in the middle of the road. I turned on the Hazard Warning Lights, but too many cars turning left pass through making it dangerous to my safety and others. I called the service department where my truck was serviced and GM roadside asst., and it got towed to the same service place. All this process was again around 2 hours in the middle of the road. They checked the truck, and found out that the battery was damaged, and an open starter fuse again. They changed, but this time they kept it on test to the next day and the starter fuse was damaged again. They found that the engine was locked, which is why the starter heats up and the amperage consumption increases, opening the fuse, the engine does not turn easily, the oil is at the correct level, it does not indicate low pressure in the initial driving test. They removed the oil pan and found metal particles in the oil and in the pan. After that they removed the rod bearings and can see that they are scratched and overheated, crankshaft scratched as well. Need order a new engine, oil cooler, oil cooler lines.

While driving on a busy highway, the vehicle lost all acceleration. Seconds later, the entire truck shutdown. Lucky, I was able to get into the right hand lane prior to losing complete power, which allowed me to steer the truck onto the shoulder. It appears that an investigation has been launched into vehicles equipped with the GM 6.2L V8 L87 engine. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001).  GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274.  This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation.  ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. PE25001 · Loss Of Motive Power Due To Engine Failure

Opened Jan 16, 2025 · Closed Oct 23, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:hard Parts Internal/mechanical

On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007).
