TRANSMISSION HAD A HARD SHIFT INTO REVERSE. DIAGNOSIS WAS THE 3-5-R WAVE PLATE AND UPON READING OTHER COMPLAINTS SEEMS TO BE COMMON. TRANSMISSION SHOP THEORY IS THAT THE WAVE PLATE WAS HARDENED TOO MUCH AND BECAME BRITTLE WITH THE FLEXING CAUSING IT TO BREAK. DEALERSHIP FIXED PROBLEM WITH WARRANTY HELP FROM GM BUT STILL COST $750.00. I BELIEVE THAT GM SHOULD HAVE PAID THE ENTIRE AMOUNT SINCE IT WAS WELL UNDER THE 100,000 MILE BUT WE OWNED IT FOR 6 YEARS. SEEMS THAT THIS FAILURE IS A FUNCTION OF MILEAGE AND NOT TIME AND THUS SHOULD BE TOTALLY COVERED. *TR

I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND FOUND NO PROBLEMS. THE NEXT WEEKEND A LONG TRIP THE VEHICLE WAS DOING THE SAME THING. I NOTICED IT MORE ON SLIGHT INCLINES WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON. AT ONE POINT MY BROTHER DRIVING BEHIND ME SAID HE SAID A PUFF OF BLACK SMOKE COME OUT OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. I NOTICED THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLASHING AT TIMES. TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY SAID THE VEHICLE HAD CODES P0300 AND P0303. THEY REPLACED THE #3 IGNITION COIL. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, MY TOTAL BILLS WERE $623. I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO REPLACE AN IGNITION COIL AT 60K MILES! *TR

MY 2009 GMC ACADIA WAS PURCHASED IN AUG 2009. ASIDE FROM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, I HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP, THE RADIATOR, & THE TIMING BELT (NONE OF WHICH WERE COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY) BUT ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2013 , MY TRANSMISSION LET GO. THE DEALERSHIP KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR 20 DAYS. CLAIM THEY COULDN'T REBUILD IT AND HAD TO GET A NEW ONE. (WHICH I HAVE SINCE BEEN TOLD THAT WAS A LIE, THAT THEY HAVE TO USE FACTORY REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS). GOT MY VEHICLE BACK ON SEPT. 28. ON MARCH 22, 2014, I BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT WAS SHOWING SIGNS OF SLIPPING TRANSMISSION AGAIN. DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS FINE SENT ME HOME. LESS THAN 2 WEEKS LATER ON APRIL 8, THE TRANSMISSION LET GO AGAIN. NO REVERSE & TRUCK WOULD NOT MOVE IN DRIVE JUST REV THE ENGINE. BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR "ANOTHER TRANSMISSION" THIS TIME THEY HAD MY VEHICLE FOR 18 DAYS. I JUST PICKED IT UP 2 DAYS AGO. THIS MORNING WHILE DRIVING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL, TRANSMISSION WENT AGAIN! THIS IS UNSAFE! I AM SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE MY KIDS AROUND IN THIS VEHICLE! I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT THIS MORNING BECAUSE OF IT! 3 TRANSMISSIONS IN 6 MONTHS?! THIS IS A RED FLAG DON'T YOU THINK.. HOW MUCH LONGER WILL GMC NOT VALUE MY LIFE OR MY FAMILIES?? SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS! *JS

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH. IT STOPPED SO I CONTINUED DRIVING UNTIL I ARRIVED HOME. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN WEAR DUE TO A FAULTY OIL MONITOR SENSOR AND IT WAS "REPAIRED". THE ISSUE HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN SINCE AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES TO ATTEMPT REPAIRS. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT I STARTED TO RESEARCH THIS VEHICLE AND FOUND OUT THAT GM KNOWS OF A RANDOM MISFIRE ISSUE AFTER ENGINE REMOVAL (MIND YOU THIS WAS TO REPAIR DAMAGE DUE THEIR FAULTY PART TO BEGIN WITH). THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE ISSUE--IT CAN BE ELECTRICAL OR YOU COULD REPLACE JUST ABOUT EVERY PART UNDER THE HOOD AND SEE IF THAT WORKS. BUT NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL FIX IT AS I STATED EARLIER, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL FIX IT. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY FAMILY AROUND IN THIS VEHICLE ANY LONGER. WE LIVE IN THE NORTH--HENCE THE REASON FOR AN AWD VEHICLE--AND I DON'T WANT TO GET STUCK SOMEWHERE, IN BELOW 0 WEATHER WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE. I NOW OWN A VERY EXPENSIVE VEHICLE THAT I DON'T DRIVE FAR AS I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS GOING TO DO. TO ME THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND LIABILITY THAT THEY HAVE TRIED TO SWEEP UNDER THE RUG LIKE THE REST OF THEIR ISSUES OF LATE. *TR

HOWEVER, THERE WERE ALSO COILS THAT WERE BAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. A WEEK LATER, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE ACADIA WAS MISSING AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP WHERE THEY SHOWED ME THAT THE PLUGS WERE ALREADY CHARRED AND NEEDED REPLACED AGAIN, AND THERE WAS ANOTHER COIL PACK THAT NEEDED REPLACED. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND A CO2 SENSOR WAS GOING BAD SO I REPLACED IT. A FEW DAYS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE GMC DEALER TOLD ME 2 OF THE 3 CATALYTIC CONVERTERS WERE BAD AND NEEDED REPLACED. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL ON AND I'M JUST WAITING FOR THE THING TO EXPLODE WHILE I'M DRIVING IT. AFTER READING OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT POWER STEERING AND ENGINE PROBLEMS WITH ACADIA'S, I'M CONVINCED A MAJOR INVESTIGATION INTO THESE VEHICLES AND THEIR SAFETY NEEDS TO BE LAUNCHED BY THE GOV. NOW THERE IS AN AIR BAG RECALL AND IN THE PAST HAVE HAD HEADLIGHT RECALLS, WATER PUMP RECALLS, AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE. THE WHOLE FLEET SHOULD BE DECLARED LEMONS! *TR

I TOOK MY 2009 ACADIA INTO THE GMC DEALER WITH AROUND 65,000 MILES ON IT AFTER BUYING IT USED (1 PREVIOUS OWNER) WITH AROUND 42,000 MILES. THEY TOLD ME I HAD A POWER STEERING LEAK IN THE RACK AND PINION AND IT WOULD COST AROUND $2000 TO REPLACE A SEAL BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO PULL THE WHOLE RACK OFF. HE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE OKAY FOR A WHILE, BUT EVENTUALLY IT WOULD CAUSE THE POWER STEERING TO GO OUT. AFTER RESEARCHING, I'VE SEEN MULTIPLE OTHER ACADIA OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS BECAUSE I THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS EFFECTED ENOUGH OF THIS MODEL VEHICLE TO WARRANT A GENERAL SAFETY RECALL. I KNOW OF 3 OTHER PEOPLE IN MY HOMETOWN WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED POWER STEERING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ACADIA'S, AND THE GMC DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED TO ME THAT IT IS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM WITH GMC ACADIA MODEL YEARS 2008-2012. IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, THEN I'M NOT SURE WHAT IS, BUT IF MY POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHILE I'M DRIVING, WELL, LET THIS SERVE AS NOTICE TO GMC. *TR

Official recalls
7Jun 30, 2015
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 15240.
May 20, 2014
General Motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through May 14, 2014, Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 9, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through March 18, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue and separate over time.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. The interim letter for the 2011-2014 model years were distributed on July 11, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). General Motors recall number for this campaign is 14187.
Mar 17, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia and 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bag (SIAB) wiring harnesses may result in the SIAB and seat belt pretensioners not deploying in the event of a crash.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Failure of the side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a crash increase the risk of injury to the driver and front seat occupant.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected harness connections with soldered connections, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2014. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. GM's number for this recall is 14030. Note: Vehicles repaired as part of Customer Satisfaction Campaign 10085 and special coverage 10335 have already had the subject condition repaired and therefore are not included in the safety recall.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES. THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELD RESTRICTS THE UPWARD ROTATION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE WHEN THE SEAT BACK IS RETURNED TO A SEATING POSITION AFTER BEING FOLDED FLAT. IF THE BUCKLE CONTACTS THE SEAT FRAME, ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SEAT TO A SEATING POSITION. IF SUFFICIENT FORCE IS APPLIED, THE BUCKLE COVER COULD BE PUSHED DOWN THE STRAP, EXPOSING AND PARTIALLY DEPRESSING THE RED RELEASE BUTTON.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT AS INTENDED DURING A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELDS. IF A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IS DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 11, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 AND HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 276,729 MY 2009 BUICK ENCLAVE, CHEVROLET COBALT, HHR, MALIBU, TRAVERSE, GMC ACADIA, PONTIAC G5, G6 AND SATURN AURA AND OUTLOOK PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLES SAFETY STANDARD 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT POSITION SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT", AND FMVSS 114, "THEFT PROTECTION AND ROLLAWAY PREVENTION". ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP MAY NOT BE FULLY ENGAGED. IF THE CLIP IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED, THE SHIFT LEVER AND THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT MATCH. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE DRIVE COULD MOVE THE SHIFTER TO "PARK" AND REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY, BUT THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT BE IN "PARK".
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AFTER THE DRIVER HAS EXITED THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND ENSURE THAT THE SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP IS FULLY ENGAGED. IN THE EVENT THAT THE CLIP DOES NOT ENGAGE, THE SHIFT CABLE WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 24, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GM IS RECALLING 16,667 MY 2009 BUICK ENCLAVE, CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO CONFORM WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 209, 'SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES.' THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IN THE SECOND OR THIRD ROW THAT IS MISSING A RIVET.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IN A VEHICLE CRASH, IF THE RIVET IS MISSING, THE BUCKLE MAY SEPARATE FROM THE MOUNTING STRAP, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE PASSENGER.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLES IN THE SECOND AND THIRD ROWS, AND REPLACE THEM IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463; SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876; OR THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE AT <A HREF=HTTP://WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM>HTTP://WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM</A> .

On August 31, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA) EA20002, as an upgrade of Recall Query (RQ) RQ19003. This investigation, related to recall 14V-266, was opened to investigate instances of detachment of the flexible steel seat belt anchor cable attached to the outboard side of the front seats in vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM). The subject vehicles included model year (MY) 2009 through 2014 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs as well as MY 2009 through 2010 Saturn Outlook SUVs. These vehicles were previously repaired for this defect under recall 14V-266. The subject vehicle population is approximately 1.3 million vehicles. Special Coverage N192219480, issued in June 2019, addressed the subject defect in vehicles that previously received the recall remedy repair for subject recall 14V-266. The Special Coverage allows for component replacement for 12 years or 180,000 miles from the initial sale date, whichever comes first. Special Coverage N192219480 instructed service technicians to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor cable for any damage to the protective sleeve and if damage was observed, the cable was replaced with a new sleeve as well as a new closeout piece that relocated the cable to mitigate the subject condition. In view of the Special Coverage conducted by General Motors, the high detectability of the subject failure, and the low rate of occurrence, this Engineering Analysis is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. RQ19003 · Seat Belt Anchor Cable Failure
Opened May 28, 2019 · Closed Aug 31, 2020
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner
On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648

DP12003 · Loss Of Headlamp Illumination
Opened Jun 4, 2012 · Closed Jul 24, 2014
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Exterior Lighting:headlights
As of July 16, 2014, out of a population of 248,453 subject vehicles, NHTSA received 473 consumer complaints of inoperative head lamp. Many of these complaints indicated that the head lamp harness suffered damage from overheating. After reviewing the complaints, ODI found: -69% (328) alleged that a single head lamp was inoperative. -18% (86) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but not at the same time. -9% (41) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative but the complaints did not indicate whether the failures had occurred at the same time. -4% (17) alleged that both head lamps were inoperative at the same time. -One additional complaint cited wire harness damage to both sides but did not specify an outage -No crashes or loss of vehicle control were reported. -Any alleged thermal damages were limited to melting of the head lamp harness and the head lamp housing. -A head lamp would intermittently fail to come on or flickers before becoming completely inoperative. For the seventeen complaints that alleged simultaneous failure of both head lamps while attempting to turn them on or while driving, the head lamp failures likely had occurred one at a time. The subject vehicle's head lamps are connected in a parallel circuit and each circuit is fused. Therefore, failure of one head lamp or its harness should not affect the other head lamp operation. Over the last 25 years, ODI has opened numerous defect investigations of the loss of headlamp illumination.Investigations that resulted in safety recalls involved simultaneous loss of illumination from both headlamps. NHTSA does not consider the loss of a single headlamp as presenting an unreasonable safety risk-such failures are readily detectable by the driver while allowing the vehicle to retain forward visibility and conspicuity from the remaining headlamp. There is typically enough time between the failure of the first headlamp and the second during which the vehicle operator can obtain the needed repairs. Based on the information currently available, NHTSA does not believe that the headlamp condition as alleged by the petitioner indicates the likelihood of a safety-related defect that would warrant a formal investigation. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize NHTSA's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.Further specifics can be found in the Federal Register Notice ODI complaint ID numbers are referenced on the next page.
AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other
On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
