THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY AND SINCE I WASN'T BRAKING, THE PERSON BEHIND ME COULD ONLY TELL BY HOW QUICKLY HE/SHE WAS GETTING CLOSE TO ME. NO BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED SO NO BRAKE LIGHTS WERE SHOWING. AFTER A FEW SECONDS I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN 3RD GEAR AND CONTINUE ON. LUCKILY THE PERSON BEHIND ME AND BEHIND HIM/HER WAS ABLE TO REACT QUICKLY ENOUGH AND NOT RUN IN TO MY REAR END. THIS OCCURS ON A VERY REGULAR BASIS. AT LEAST 3-4 TIMES PER WEEK WILL MY CAR NOT BE ABLE TO GET INTO A GEAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS CURRENTLY NO FIX FROM FORD. THE ONLY FIX IS TO CHANGE THE FLUID IN THE TRANSMISSION WHICH HAS BEEN REPORTED TO NOT IMPROVE THE PROBLEM. *TR

VEHICLE WILL NOT ENGAGE 1ST GEAR FROM A STOP LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY, GEARS 2,3,5 ON UP OR DOWNSHIFT ARE HIGH EFFORT WITH OCCASIONAL GRIND IN 3RD. IN MANY INSTANCES THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME IN HIGH TRAFFIC COMES CLOSE TO REAR ENDING MY VEHICLE. DOWN AND UNSHIFTING PROBLEM IS WORSE IN SLOW TURNS. *TR

THE MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS IN THESE CARS ARE STARTING TO FAIL LEFT AND RIGHT. IT TAKES NOTHING BUT A SHORT SEARCH ONLINE TO FIND THAT OUT. MY CAR IS NO DIFFERENT. THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR LOCKED ME OUT OF A GEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC CAUSING ME TO BE NEARLY REAR ENDED. I AM STARTING TO WORRY FOR THE SAFETY AND VALUE OF MY VEHICLE AND PASSENGERS. FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO FIX THIS ISSUE OTHER THAN OFFER A FLUID CHANGE IN THE TRANSMISSION. THIS HAS BEEN PROVEN TO NOT WORK BECAUSE I HAVE THIS 'FIX' AND MY PROBLEMS CONTINUE. FORD NEEDS TO STEP UP AND RECALL THESE CARS AND FIX THE TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED.

OUR 2011 MUSTANG GT WITH 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS A TERRIBLE NOTCHY SHIFTER THAT I'VE COMPLAINED ABOUT 2 TIMES TO MY DEALER. THE FIRST TIME THEY REPLACED THE CLUTCH, AND THE SECOND TIME THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID ACCORDING TO A TSB FROM FORD. I READ THE TSB ONLINE AND IT SAYS IT'S FOR CARS WITH DIFFICULT SHIFTING IN COLD TEMPERATURES (WHICH ISN'T MY ISSUE) BUT THEY INSISTED THIS WOULD FIX IT. IMMEDIATELY, THE SHIFTING WAS WORSE AND I'M HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE, SECOND AND THIRD. WHEN YOU HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY QUICKLY, YOU CAN'T GET THE CAR IN GEAR AND THIS IS REALLY STARTING TO SCARE ME. THE DEALER CLAIMS THERE IS NO OTHER FIX AVAILABLE SO I ASKED THEM TO GIVE ME A NEW CAR (MINE ONLY HAS 1400 MILES ON IT) AND THEY SAID "NO, THEY ALL DO THIS" AND IMPLIED I'M NOT SHIFTING CORRECTLY, I'VE BEE DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR 40 YEARS. I KNOW HOW TO SHIFT. THIS PROBLEM IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. WHY AREN'T THEY RECALLING THIS BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS HURT? *TR

I TRIED TO SHIFT BACK DOWN INTO 2ND GEAR AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO ANY GEAR (4TH) WE HAD SLOWED SO MUCH CARS BEHIND ME CAME SCREECHING TO A HALT AND I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO GET REAR ENDED. THIS CAR HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE. THE LAST TIME THEY CHANGED TO A NEW FLUID BUT THAT ONLY MADE MATTERS WORSE. THIS IS DANGEROUS PLAIN AND SIMPLE AND MY WIFE NOW REFUSES TO DRIVE OR RIDE IN IT. THERE ARE A LOT OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND WEBSITES DEVOTED TO ISSUE WITH THE MT82 TRANSMISSION SO I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. THESE CARS HAVE TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS INJURED OR KILLED. *TR

6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION FAILS TO SHIFT OR SHIFT SMOOTHLY INTO 2ND GEAR CAUSING A SAFETY SITUATION IN ATTEMPTING TO PULL OUT IN TRAFFIC. WENT TO PULL OUT IN TRAFFIC AND COULD NOT SHIFT INTO 2ND, TRAFFIC WAS BEARING DOWN AND I HAD TO QUICKLY SHIFT TO THIRD. PROBLEM STARTED WHEN CAR HAD ABOUT 1000 MILES ON IT. CAR WAS CHECKED OUT BY A FORD DEALER AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS NORMAL AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE. UPON INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE ACROSS HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF 2011 FORD MUSTANGS WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANS. TRANSMISSION EXHIBITS EXTREME NOTCHINESS AND GRINDING/CLANKING WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT INTO 2ND. WHAT'S STRANGE IS THAT IT IS INTERMITTENT IN NATURE AND DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN NEW. *TR

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Power Train:manual Transmission

The Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Ford as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 364 unique reports indicating various shift quality issues while driving.Ford identified several factors that may contribute to shift quality concerns in the subject vehicles, including cold transmission, clutch stay-out at high engine speeds, gear clash or grinding, and gradual loosening of clutch plate bolts in some early production vehicles. The largest percentage of complaints indicated higher than expected shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. These complaints were related to transmission fluid viscosity and the higher shift efforts resolved themselves with the drivetrain warming.Ford published technical service bulletin TSB 11-3-18 to inform technicians that a lower viscosity fluid was available for use to address the cold shift issues. The clutch stay-out condition typically occurs at engine speeds greater than 4000 rpm.It does not prevent the selection of any gear, but may delay clutch re-engagement depending on how long the driver maintains the higher engine speed.Ford identified rotating inertia of the clutch components as the root cause and replacement clutch pedal parts were made available under Ford TSB 10-19-4.A number of reports alleged increasing difficulty selecting gears along with gear clash or grinding.Grinding or notchy gear shifts may be caused by gradual loosening of clutch plate fasteners, which is promoted by certain aggressive shifting. This condition is progressive in nature and initially results in symptoms related to shift quality/feel.Clutch plate bolt loosening will not result in inability to select any gear unless the progressive symptoms are ignored until complete clutch failure occurs.ODI?s analysis identified only five complaints alleging an inability to shift into gear due to loose clutch plate bolts.None of these resulted in a stall and gear shifting could occur before engine start.A revised fastener was designed and implemented in production and is available for service through a special service message. There is no indication of loss of motive power or unreasonable safety risk associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. This preliminary evaluation is closed.
