NOW WITH WARM WEATHER IT IS NOT AS NOTCHY BUT WILL STILL OCCASIONALLY NOT WANT TO ENGAGE INTO FIRST GEAR AND GRINDS OR DOESN'T WANT TO GO INTO 2ND IF YOU ARE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN WHILE SHIFTING.WHILE I HAVEN'T HAD ANY CLOSE CALLS AS OF YET I FEEL AS THOUGH SOME OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A DANGEROUS SITUATION TO OCCUR. *TR

THE CAR MAKES A GRINDING AND KNOCKING NOISE WHEN I ACCELERATE GENTLY AND COAST AT LOW SPEEDS UP TO 15 MPH IN 1ST GEAR. IT DOESN'T MAKE THE KNOCKING NOISE WHEN I ACCELERATE HARD NOR DOES IT MAKE THIS SOUND WHEN IM CRUISING ABOVE 15 MPH AND GIVE IT GAS. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE TRANSMISSION MAY GO OUT AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR

ROUGH AND HARD SHIFTING IN 2011 MUSTANG GT MANUAL TRANSMISSION. EXPERIENCING ROUGH SHIFTING IN 1ST GEAR AND HARD SHIFTING IN 2ND GEAR WITH GRIND SOMETIMES. ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED RECENTLY SINCE I COULDN'T SHIFT INTO 2ND GEAR IN THREE ATTEMPTS AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL. THE REVERSE GEAR IS ALSO A PROBLEM. REQUIRES PUSHING DOWN TO ENGAGE INTO REVERSE BUT SOMETIMES POPS INTO 1ST INSTEAD OF REVERSE AND MOVES IN THE OTHER DIRECTION AND GIVES ME A GOOD SCARE EVERY NOW AND THEN. THESE TRANSMISSIONS ARE DEFECTIVE AND CAN/WILL RESULT IN ACCIDENTS. *TR

WELL, MY CAR JUST NEARLY GOT ME INTO AN ACCIDENT TODAY ON MY WAY TO WORK. UPHILL CURVE ONTO A STATE HIGHWAY, RUN FIRST OUT, GO FOR SECOND AND.....NADA. GO TO THIRD, LUG-LUG-LUG, BECAUSE I MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO 2ND. SPEED STILL DESCENDING. TRAFFIC AT MY REAR IS CLOSING IN ON ME, AND FAST. THIS IS A 60MPH ONRAMP. GO FOR FIRST, WALLED OUT. SECOND, GRIND. I WOUND UP HAVING TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF A CURVE AND TURN THE CAR OFF, THEN BACK ON AGAIN BEFORE IT WOULD LET ME GET INTO 1ST GEAR. STILL CAN'T GET INTO SECOND. I CRAWLED ALL THE WAY UP THE ONRAMP IN FIRST, UNTIL I GOT TO FLAT GROUND, THEN NEARLY REDLINED FIRST BEFORE SHIFTING TO THIRD TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN AND HEADED TO WORK. MY CAR WAS JUST IN FOR SERVICE ON THIS SHIFTING ISSUE LAST WEEK. THEY SWAPPED THE FLUID AND SAID THEY NEEDED TO ORDER PARTS (I'M ASSUMING CLUTCH ASSEMBLY, BECAUSE MINE FEELS LIKE IT IS ON ITS LAST LEGS, AND PROBABLY THE CLUTCH PEDAL ONE TOO, BECAUSE I NOTICED THAT THE CLUTCH PEDAL STICKS ON REV-MATCHED DOWNSHIFTS...). I ALMOST PARKED IT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SO I COULD CALL FORD ROADSIDE AND HAVE THEM TOW IT, BUT I HAD TO BE AT WORK. THESE THINGS NEVER SEEM TO HAPPEN WHEN IT'S CONVENIENT ENOUGH TO JUST SEND IT IN FROM EXACTLY WHERE IT SITS. THE DEALERSHIP I AM DEALING WITH HAS NOT CALLED ME BACK ABOUT THE PARTS, EVEN THOUGH THEY SAID THE PARTS SHOULD BE HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS WEEK. *TR

SHIFTING INTO & OUT OF REVERSE IS ALSO AN ISSUE WHICH CAN INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF TIME THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO ROLL BACK UNCONTROLLABLY IN PARKING LOTS WITH CHILDREN. WHILE DRIVING MY 2011 FORD MUSTANG MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SECOND GEAR WOULD NOT ENGAGE CAUSING A DRASTIC SLOWING OF THE VEHICLE IN TRAFFIC. THIS ALMOST RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME CRASHING INTO THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE. THIS ALSO OCCURRED AT LEAST 2 OTHER TIMES BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH OF 2011. *TR

PE11024 · Inability To Shift Gears On Acceleration

Opened Aug 3, 2011 · Closed Dec 14, 2011

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Power Train:manual Transmission

The Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Ford as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 364 unique reports indicating various shift quality issues while driving.Ford identified several factors that may contribute to shift quality concerns in the subject vehicles, including cold transmission, clutch stay-out at high engine speeds, gear clash or grinding, and gradual loosening of clutch plate bolts in some early production vehicles. The largest percentage of complaints indicated higher than expected shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. These complaints were related to transmission fluid viscosity and the higher shift efforts resolved themselves with the drivetrain warming.Ford published technical service bulletin TSB 11-3-18 to inform technicians that a lower viscosity fluid was available for use to address the cold shift issues. The clutch stay-out condition typically occurs at engine speeds greater than 4000 rpm.It does not prevent the selection of any gear, but may delay clutch re-engagement depending on how long the driver maintains the higher engine speed.Ford identified rotating inertia of the clutch components as the root cause and replacement clutch pedal parts were made available under Ford TSB 10-19-4.A number of reports alleged increasing difficulty selecting gears along with gear clash or grinding.Grinding or notchy gear shifts may be caused by gradual loosening of clutch plate fasteners, which is promoted by certain aggressive shifting. This condition is progressive in nature and initially results in symptoms related to shift quality/feel.Clutch plate bolt loosening will not result in inability to select any gear unless the progressive symptoms are ignored until complete clutch failure occurs.ODI?s analysis identified only five complaints alleging an inability to shift into gear due to loose clutch plate bolts.None of these resulted in a stall and gear shifting could occur before engine start.A revised fastener was designed and implemented in production and is available for service through a special service message. There is no indication of loss of motive power or unreasonable safety risk associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. This preliminary evaluation is closed.
