LOUD WHINE FROM UNDER HOOD AREA, POSSIBLY MT82 MANUAL TRANSMISSION, HEARD FROM 2.5K-3.5K RPMS AND IN GEARS ONE TO FOUR WHEN UP SHIFTING. WHINE ONLY HEARD WHEN CAR IS IN MOTION. WHINE IS NOT HEARD WHEN IN REVERSE GEAR. CLUNKING NOISE CAN SOMETIMES BE HEARD WITH 1ST TO 2ND UP SHIFT AND IS SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT TO SHIFT AT TIMES. ENGAGEMENT OF GEARS CAN BE AUDIBLY HEARD AND 'FELT' IN THE DRIVERS SEAT DURING THE ROUGH 1ST TO 2ND SHIFTS. HAVE HAD THIS TROUBLE SINCE NEW WITH 112 MILES ON THE CAR STARTING OUT. NOW CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 275 MILES. WHINE NOISE HAS BECOME NOTICEABLY LOUDER OVER A SHORT PERIOD AND MORE FREQUENT ALREADY. 1ST TO 2ND HARD SHIFTS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT EVEN OVER SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. REGARDLESS WHETHER CAR IS WARMED UP OR NOT, WHINE AND HARD SHIFT FREQUENCY SEEMS UNAFFECTED. I HAVE NOT RAN THE ENGINE SPEED OVER 4K RPMS SINCE PURCHASED. HAVE REPORTED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT CAVALIER FORD OF CHESAPEKE, VA, LEFT CELL AND WORK NUMBER INCLUDING WORK TIMES AND HAVE HAD NO FEEDBACK AS PROMISED FROM ANY TECH AS OF THE TIME OF THIS WRITING. I HAVE READ AND HEARD OF MANY 2011 MUSTANG OWNERS WITH THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAVING THESE SAME SYMPTOMS; SOMETIMES WITH DANGEROUS RESULTS ON THE ROAD. *TR

THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ROUGHLY 6 MONTHS (I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR ALMOST A YEAR AS OF THIS WRITING) WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, SHIFTING FROM 4TH TO 5TH GEAR CAUSES A LOUD GRINDING NOISE. THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS FULLY DEPRESSED AT THIS TIME. THIS OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. ALSO, AT ONE TIME THE SHIFTER GOT STUCK BETWEEN TWO GEARS WHEN STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT WHEN TRYING TO SHIFT FROM NEUTRAL TO FIRST. AT THIS TIME A CAR COULD HAVE RUN INTO ME WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET THE CAR INTO GEAR. SO FAR I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE CAR INTO THE SHOP TO CORRECT THE FAILURE, AS I HAVE LEARNED FORD DOES NOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT IT. ALL THEY DO IS REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART AND/OR PUT NEW FLUID IN. I AM WAITING TO SEE IF THEY WILL ISSUE A RECALL AND PERFORM A PROPER REPAIR FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE RUNNING INTO THESE SYMPTOMS ON THE 2011 FORD MUSTANG GT'S. *KB

ALSO WHEN JUST SLOWING DOWN AND THE CAR SHIFTS TO 1ST GEAR. THE SHIFTING IS ERRATIC AND NOISY. WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, IT ALSO BANGS INTO 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. THE DEALERSHIP CHECKED IT OUT AND SAID THAT THIS IS PART OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND IS THE WAY THE TRANSMISSION WAS DESIGNED, UNTIL IT GETS USED TO MY DRIVING HABITS. THAT WAS 17, 000 MILES AGO. THEY SAID THERE MIGHT BE A COMPUTER UPGRADE IN THE FUTURE. IN THE MEANTIME I FEAR A REAR END COLLISION WHEN I AM UNABLE TO PICK UP SPEED BECAUSE OF THE HESITATION AND CLUNKING. *TR

VEHICLE HAS BEEN INTO THE SHOP FOR A FLUID CHANGE (TSB), WHICH DID NOT HELP. FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE OR IMPLEMENT FURTHER CORRECTIVE ACTION. I AM CONCERNED THE CONDITION WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP INTO THE DANGEROUS FAILURE MODE OTHER OWNERS ARE BEGINNING TO SEE (FAILURE TO ENGAGE GEAR). THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION ON MY 2011 FORD MUSTANG HAS ERRATIC SHIFTING WHICH HAS CAUSED ME TO NEARLY BE REAR-ENDED TWICE NOW AND HIT BY ON-COMING TRAFFIC AS IT FAILS TO GO IN GEAR, EVEN WITH THE CLUTCH FULLY ENGAGED. THERE APPEARS TO BE PROBLEMS SHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND FROM 2ND TO 3RD. THE GEARS WILL NOT ENGAGE AND THE TRANSMISSION REMAINS IN NEUTRAL. THE LATEST INCIDENT FOR ME WAS WHEN I WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPLIGHT THAT TURNED GREEN, I SHIFTED FROM 1ST TO 2ND BUT COULDN'T GET THE TRANSMISSION INTO 2ND OR 3RD WITH THE CLUTCH FULLY DEPRESSED. BECAUSE I WAS IN NEUTRAL, I LOST MOST ACCELERATION AND THE SUV BEHIND ME NEARLY REAR-ENDED AS I WAS STUCK IN NEUTRAL AND NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I WAS ABLE TO AT LEAST REV THE ENGINE ENOUGH TO GET IT INTO 4TH TO GET ENOUGH POWER TO THE WHEELS TO AVOID BEING HIT. *TR

I OWN A 2011 MUSTANG GT 5.0. MY CAR IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER AND IS ONLY DRIVEN ON WEEKENDS. THIS CAR IS 100% STOCK EXCEPT FOR DIFFERENT MUFFLERS. I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE MARCH, 2011 AND ONLY HAVE 950 MILES ON IT AS OF TODAY. THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN THIS CAR IS GARBAGE AND LITTLE SCARY. I'M 34 AND HAVE GROWN UP DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, BUT THIS MT82 HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN. THE PAST FEW DAYS, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS ENGAGING INTO 1ST GEAR AND GRINDING INTO SECOND. AT ONE POINT I COULD NOT SHIFT AND FEARED THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME WAS GOING TO REAR END ME. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, FORD HAS HAD THESE TRANSMISSIONS IN THE NEW MUSTANGS FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF NOW. HOWEVER, FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THERE IS A TSB FOR A LIGHTER TRANSMISSION OIL, BUT THAT IS IT. FORD NEEDS TO FIX THIS MT82 BEFORE I GET REAR ENDED AND HURT!!! FORD NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND LET NEW OWNERS KNOW THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR SAFETY. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, FORD IS TIGHT LIPPED AND THAT TELLS ME THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT MINE OR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. *TR

1. THIS EVENT HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE 3 WEEKS I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE. THIS OCCURRED IN A NORMAL DRIVING SITUATIONS. NO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES. 2. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT GO INTO FIRST GEAR. I CAN'T GET OUT OF SOMEONE'S WAY AT A LIGHT. IT ALSO WILL NOT TRANSITION INTO SECOND GEAR, EVEN WITH A THROTTLE BLIP. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE VEHICLE BEGINS TO COAST AND I HAVE TO FIGHT WITH IT TO GET INTO GEAR. IT'S DISTRACTING AND FRANKLY NERVE RACKING. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN TRANSITIONING FROM REVERSE TO FIRST GEAR, THE TRANSMISSION GRINDS. ON COMING TO A STOP, THE TRANSMISSION WILL VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. IT ALMOST SHAKES THE SHIFTER OUT OF YOUR HAND. 3. I CALLED FORD. THEY GAVE ME A CLAIM NUMBER. FORD DID NOT OFFER ANY ADVICE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I HAVE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A SERVICE TECH. HOWEVER FORD IS NOT GUARANTEEING THAT I WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS INSPECTION. IT'S ALMOST LIKE A THREAT. IF NOTHING IS FOUND TO BE WRONG WITH A BRAND NEW TRANSMISSION, I AM CULPABLE FOR THE COST. FORD OFFERS NO RENTAL, SO THIS COMPOUNDS THE ISSUE. *TR

PE11024 · Inability To Shift Gears On Acceleration

Opened Aug 3, 2011 · Closed Dec 14, 2011

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Power Train:manual Transmission

The Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Ford as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 364 unique reports indicating various shift quality issues while driving.Ford identified several factors that may contribute to shift quality concerns in the subject vehicles, including cold transmission, clutch stay-out at high engine speeds, gear clash or grinding, and gradual loosening of clutch plate bolts in some early production vehicles. The largest percentage of complaints indicated higher than expected shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. These complaints were related to transmission fluid viscosity and the higher shift efforts resolved themselves with the drivetrain warming.Ford published technical service bulletin TSB 11-3-18 to inform technicians that a lower viscosity fluid was available for use to address the cold shift issues. The clutch stay-out condition typically occurs at engine speeds greater than 4000 rpm.It does not prevent the selection of any gear, but may delay clutch re-engagement depending on how long the driver maintains the higher engine speed.Ford identified rotating inertia of the clutch components as the root cause and replacement clutch pedal parts were made available under Ford TSB 10-19-4.A number of reports alleged increasing difficulty selecting gears along with gear clash or grinding.Grinding or notchy gear shifts may be caused by gradual loosening of clutch plate fasteners, which is promoted by certain aggressive shifting. This condition is progressive in nature and initially results in symptoms related to shift quality/feel.Clutch plate bolt loosening will not result in inability to select any gear unless the progressive symptoms are ignored until complete clutch failure occurs.ODI?s analysis identified only five complaints alleging an inability to shift into gear due to loose clutch plate bolts.None of these resulted in a stall and gear shifting could occur before engine start.A revised fastener was designed and implemented in production and is available for service through a special service message. There is no indication of loss of motive power or unreasonable safety risk associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. This preliminary evaluation is closed.
