DRIVING NORMALLY WHEN LOAD SOUND CAME OUT FROM UNDER HOOD. ACCELERATING SLIGHTLY TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD SOUNDED LIKE BACK FIRING. EXPEDITION WAS TOWED TO MECHANICS. TOW TRUCK OPERATOR ALSO MENTIONED THAT HE HIMSELF HAD TOWED BETWEEN 15 AND 20 EXPEDITIONS DUE TO THIS SPARK PLUG PROBLEM AND WE LIVE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY. AFTER EXAMINING, MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT ONE HALF OF THE HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE SPARK PLUG COMING OUT OF THE HEAD AND STRIPING THE THREADS ON ITS WAY OUT. HE CALLED FELLOW MECHANIC THAT WORKS AT FORD WHO TOLD HIM HE HAS REPLACED MANY FORDS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THREADS ARE NOT ADEQUATE FOR HOLDING SPARK PLUG IN HEAD. OTHER DAMAGE WAS DONE UNDER THE HOOD DUE TO EJECTION OF PLUG. CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM COULD HAPPEN TO THE OTHER SIDE A DIRECT QUOTE FROM MY MECHANIC. *JB

WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOPLIGHT I HEARD A TREMENDOUS POP. UPON INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE #6 PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD TAKING THE COIL PACK WITH IT. THE ENTIRE HEAD HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HEAR THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON WITH THE FORD TRITON V-8 ENGINES WHICH UTILIZE THE ALLUMINUM HEADS.

OIL LEAK NOTICED ON DRIVEWAY, DEALER FOUND PASSENGER-SIDE REAR OF HEAD GASKET LEAKING. DEALER REPLACED HEAD GASKET AT COST OF $1300, HOWEVER AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM IT IS OBVIOUS THAT MANY OTHER 1999 5.4L ENGINES HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM RECURRING FREQUENTLY. BOUGHT VEHICLE USED AND DO NOT KNOW IF THIS COMPONENT WAS ALREADY REPLACED PRIOR TO PURCHASE (BOUGHT AT 41K MILES). THIS SPECIFIC HEAD GASKET FAILURE IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THESE 1999 5.4L ENGINES, MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS WILL CONTINUE TO RECUR DUE TO DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING.
