RECEIVED CAR BACK AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE UNTIL 29015 MILES AND SAME THING HAPPENED. GOING DOWN FREEWAY, THE CAR ACCELERATED UP TO 85 MPH ON ITS OWN AND WOULD NOT IDLE DOWN. WHEN IN PARK, RPM'S WERE BETWEEN 3000 AND 4000 AND WOULD NOT GO DOWN. EXITED FREEWAY NEVER PUTTING MY FOOT ON GAS PEDDLE. WAS GOING DOWN 5 LANE HWY. AT 55 MPH WITH FOOT ON BRAKE CONSTANTLY. PULLED INTO PARKING LOT A POLICEMAN WAS STANDING THERE. I ASKED HIM TO COME OVER TO LOOK AT ISSUE. HE THOUGHT MY FOOT WAS ON GAS. I THEN OPENED MY DOOR AND HUNG MY FEET OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. HIS STATEMENT WAS "'THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS''. I TOOK VIDEO SHOWING RPM'S AT 3500 AND SPEED ODOMETER AT ZERO. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, DROPPED OFF FOR WEEKEND. WHEN THEY CHECKED THE CAR ON MONDAY MORNING THEY COULD AGAIN NOT DUPLICATE IT. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR FIVE DAYS, NUMEROUS PEOPLE DRIVING THE CAR BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE IT. THEY TELL ME IF THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE IT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE THE VIDEO. I LOVE THE CAR BUT I TAKE MY LIFE IN MY HANDS WHEN I DRIVE IT AND I STILL OWE QUITE A BIT OF MONEY ON IT. WHAT RECOURSE DO I HAVE...PLEASE HELP!

THERE IS A SHUDDER AND LOSS OF POWER WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP IN THE 2017 FORD FOCUS S WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THERE IS EXCESSIVE JERKINESS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP AND AT LOW SPEEDS, FROM AROUND 0-25 MILES PER HOUR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND AN APPARENT PLAGUING ISSUE IN THE FORD FOCUS FROM AT LEAST THE 2015 MODEL. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS TIMES WHEN I HAVE NEARLY BEEN CAUGHT IN TRAFFIC MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN BECAUSE OF UNRESPONSIVENESS TO THE POWER GOING TO THE WHEELS; THERE HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE FRUSTRATED DRIVERS BEHIND ME WHEN TRYING TO GET GOING FROM A STOP. ADDITIONALLY, THE CAR SEEMS TO WANT TO STALL AFTER COLD START AFTER WORK AND DRIVING ABOUT 2000 FEET TO THE TRAFFIC LIGHT (SO THIS WOULD BE THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, ABOUT 6-9 HOURS FROM FIRST COLD START OF THE DAY). I'VE HAD TO PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR WHILE THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS TO KEEP THE CAR IDLING. IT HAS THE SAME SHUDDERING FEELING, WITHOUT THE JERKINESS OF THE TRANSMISSION, WHILE WAITING AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE ISSUE OF THE FEELING OF WANTING TO STALL GOES AWAY WITH ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF DRIVING. THE JERKINESS AND SHUDDERING OF THE TRANSMISSION IS CONSTANT. PASSENGERS ARE QUICK TO GET MOTION SICKNESS WHEN RIDING IN THE VEHICLE.

THE 2017 FORD FOCUS S WITH UNDER 26,000 MILES HAS A STEERING ISSUE. THE STEERING WHEEL GETS STUCK AND IS HARD TO STEER, WON'T RETURN TO NEUTRAL POSITION WITHOUT BEING FORCED BACK, AND IS UNSTABLE AT MID AND HIGH SPEEDS. THERE IS A SOUND THAT IS STARTING TO PRESENT ITSELF, SIMILAR TO A ROOFER HAMMERING NAILS, THAT COMES FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL AT LOWER SPEEDS. FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM SUDDENLY WHEN PULLING OUT FROM MY STREET PARKING. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STUCK IN ITS NEUTRAL POSITION, AND STEERING HARD TO THE LEFT THERE WAS A POP WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL RELEASED FROM ITS NEUTRAL POSITION. PRIOR TO THIS EVENT AND SUBSEQUENT STEERING ISSUES, WHEN EXITING THE HIGHWAY AT 15-25 MILES PER HOUR, THERE WAS A ROLLING AND SWIRLING SENSATION GOING INTO THE TURN, ALMOST LIKE SOMETHING WAS NOT ENTIRELY CONNECTED IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THIS SLIGHTLY DETECTABLE ISSUE WAS NOTICED 100% OF THE TIME, EACH TIME I EXITED THE FREEWAY. IT FELT LIKE I WAS LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AS THE CAR ENTERED AND EXITED THE TURN, WHICH WAS NOT ATTRIBUTABLE TO TIRE SLIPPAGE. FELT LIKE IT WAS FROM THE SUSPENSION.

5EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure
Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys
On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PE23015 · Oil Pump Failure

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:oil/lubrication:pump
On September 20, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-015 to investigate instances of engine failure due to loss of oil pressure in model year (MY) 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport vehicles. Some consumers reported a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. The investigation revealed that the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm may fracture, separate from the tensioner backing plate, and/or the oil pump drive belt may degrade and lose teeth, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure. A loss of engine oil pressure can result in engine seizure, which can result in a loss of motive power and a loss of mechanical vacuum pump required to provide power braking assist, increase the risk of a crash. On December 22, 2023, Ford filed recall 23V-905 for certain MY 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The recall remedy provides the replacement of the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt with redesigned parts to improve robustness. In view of the recall action being taken by Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. RQ23006 · Loss Of Motive Power
Opened Sep 15, 2023 · Closed Dec 20, 2024
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:evaporative Emissions:canister
On September 15, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 98 consumer complaints alleging loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles. The RQ focused on the effectiveness of the remedies of Recall 18V-735 and 19V-515. In October 2018, Ford issued Recall 18V-735, which updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software in MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI engines built prior to April 13, 2017, and those with 2.0L GTDI engines built prior to February 2, 2018. The recall addressed vehicles experiencing a malfunctioning Canister Purge Valve (CPV) that can stick open and PCM software that does not adequately detect a stuck-open CPV condition. A CPV that is stuck open can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself. This deformation of the fuel tank can cause a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate, an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power. In July 2019, Ford issued Recall 19V-515, which addressed certain MY 2012 and MY 2017 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI and MY 2013-2014 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines whose PCM software had been reprogrammed as a part of recall 18V-735. The updated software calibrations for these subject vehicles were not properly installed by Ford at the time of production. Approximately one year after this RQ was opened, on September 25, 2024, Ford initiated a customer satisfaction program (24N07) for MY 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the 2.0L GDI and GTDI engines to—as ODI learned during this investigation—address a different issue with the CPV from the primary focus of the safety recalls (18V-735 and 19V-515). Ford stated the CPV may not operate as intended in these vehicles. A failed CPV on its own merit, may cause drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed, which will be accompanied by an illuminated MIL. This program provides a one-time replacement of the CPV for vehicles with 15 years of service or less (with no mileage restriction). This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. It is to be noted that the customer satisfaction program being taken by Ford to address this RQ investigation results in a much different and significantly less severe problem than the safety action taken to remedy 18V-735 and 19V-515. ODI found no further issues with the combined scope and severity related to 18V-735 and 19V-515 therefore, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
