DEATH WOBBLE, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, I RAN OVER SOME TRAIN TRACKS AND THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY. I HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO ALMOST A STOP TO GET IT TO QUIT. SCARED MY WIFE HALF TO DEATH. VERY DANGEROUS.

THIS IS REFERRED TO AS A "DEATH WOBBLE." WE HAVE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO OUR LOCAL DEALER FOR THE SERVICE BULLETIN REPAIR THAT FORD HAS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE REPAIR DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER AND FORD CUSTOMER CARE DO NOT HAVE A SOLUTION. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND OUR DEALER TELLS US THEY HAVE 8 TRUCKS IN FOR SERVICE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND NO SOLUTION. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

DRIVING SOUTH ON I-95 JUST NORTH OF PORTLAND,ME. TRAVELING WITH NO LOAD AT 70 MPH ON DRY PAVEMENT. CAME ACROSS A BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINT WHICH RAN SLIGHTLY DIAGONAL TO THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. THE TRUCK WENT INTO A VIOLENT DEATH WOBBLE. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS SHUDDERING. I HAD ALL I COULD DO TO KEEP TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SHAKING LEFT TO RIGHT AT A HIGH OSCILLATION. I HAD LIMITED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND LET OF THE ACCELERATOR AND DRIFTED TOWARD THE BREAKDOWN LANE. AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THE OSCILLATION STOPPED. SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE CONDITION REPEATED. WHEN I GOT HOME I WENT ON LINE AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I HAVE JUST OVER 50K MILES ON THE TRUCK. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACE THE TIRES AS THEY MAY BE GETTING WORN. I DID FOLLOW THAT INSTRUCTION ALTHOUGH THE TIRES STILL MET THE WEAR LIMITS. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT FORD HAS ISSUED A TSB # 18-2268 WHICH I AM GOING TO HAVE EXECUTED NEXT WEEK WHICH LOOKS INTO THIS PROBLEM AND MAKES MINOR ADJUSTMENT TO THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT. ALL THAT SAID, THE PROBLEM IS FAR GREATER THAN SOME TIRE WEAR AND ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENTS. NO VEHICLE SHOULS SHAKE AND OCILLATE YOU OFF OF THE ROAD IN A VIOLENT OSCILLATION WHERE THE DRIVER LOSES THEIR ABILITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. FORD HAS A FAR MORE SERIOUS DESIGN ISSUE WITH THESE TRUCKS. AS THEY DO NOT ACKNOWLEGE THE PROBLEM AND OFFER A TRUE FIX (AT THEIR COST) THE OWNER OF THESE VEHICLES IS PLAYING A GAME OF RUSSIAN ROULETTE UNTIL THE VEHICLE GOES BACK INTO THE VIOLENT OSCILLATION. AFTER READING MANY ON-LINE POSTS, THIS APPEARS TO BE HAPPENING AT ALL DIFFERENT MILEAGE LEVELS. FORD NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE CUSTOMER AND THEIR FAMILY SHOULD NOT BE ENDANGERED FOR A DEFECTIVE FRONT SUSPENSION

I EXPERIENCED WHAT IS CONSIDERED THE "DEATH WOBBLE" TWICE LAST WEEK WHILE TRAVELING AT AROUND 70 MPH, BOTH TIMES IT HAPPENED AFTER CROSSING A BRIDGE SEAM THE TRUCK BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING VIOLENTLY , I THOUGHT MY AXLE UNDER THE TRUCK HAD BROKE , IT WAS SO VIOLENT I WASN'T EVEN THINKING ABOUT THE OTHER DRIVERS TRAVELING AT SAME SPEED AS I HAD TO SLOW TO ALMOST 20 MPH TO GET IT TO STOP BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ONCE I COULD CONTROL THE STEERING. SO AFTER CHECKING TO MAKE SURE ALL WAS GOOD ,I WAS STILL ON ALL FOURS AND NOT EVER HEARING OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS "DEATH WOBBLE THING " ASSUMING VDOT NEEDED TO FIX SOME PAVEMENT I CONTINUED AND ABOUT THREE MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE SAME THING HAPPENED AFTER CROSSING A BRIDGE OVER A BRIDGE SEAM BUT THIS TIME I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE AND WAS RIGHT BESIDE AN EIGHTEEN WHEELER .WITH VEHICLES ON ALL THREE SIDES OF ME , NO WAY TO GET OFF HIGHWAY , AND A VIOLENT, SHAKING AND UNCONTROLLABLE STEER WHEEL, I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO BRAKE AND SLOW TO 30 MPH . THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE TRUCK TO FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY ARE DECIDING WHAT IS WRONG WITH AND WHAT CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE AND SEEMS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THE 2017.

TYPICAL HIGHWAY DRIVING OVER MINOR ABNORMALITIES IN ROADWAY AT SPEEDS OVER 50 MPH CAN CAUSE THE STEERING TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND WILL CONTINUE UNLESS/UNTIL YOU BRAKE NEARLY TO A STOP. THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING AND HAS NEARLY CAUSED SEVERAL COLLISIONS BY ME PERSONALLY. THERE IS NO STEERING CONTROL UNTIL YOU HAVE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. THIS CONDITION IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS A DEATH WOBBLE. FORD HAS A TSB ON IT BUT THEY ARE SIMPLY REPLACING DEFECTIVE PARTS TO GET PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND NOT SOLVING THE TRUE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. IF NOT CURED PROPERLY, LIVES WILL BE LOST BECAUSE OF THIS KNOWN FLAWED DESIGN. PLEASE DON'T LET THIS KILL ANYONE (ELSE?)!!!

UNCONTROLLED "DEATH WOBBLE" WHEN DRIVING OVER 45 MPH. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE BEGINS TO OSCILLATE VIOLENTLY, WHICH CAUSES THE TRUCK TO SHAKE (WOBBLE) IN AN EXTREMELY UNCONTROLLABLE MANNER. SINCE THE DEATH WOBBLE USUALLY OCCURS AT HIGH SPEEDS, IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO TURN INTO ADJACENT VEHICLES CAUSING FATALITIES. THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER FROM A DEATH WOBBLE IS TO UNEXPECTEDLY SLOW DOWN, WHICH IS ALSO DANGEROUS TO NEIGHBORING VEHICLES ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. IN MY PARTICULAR CASE, THIS OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING AT 70MPH ON AN INTERSTATE, AT NIGHT, AND DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT AND AFTER DRIVING ONTO A ROAD-BRIDGE TRANSITION, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SUDDENLY VIOLENTLY SHAKE, AND THE STEERING WHEEL ROCKED BACK AND FORTH. I WAS FORCED TO SLOW DOWN AND ALL THE VEHICLES AROUND ME HAD TO TURN INTO THE MEDIAN TO AVOID HITTING MY VEHICLE. I CHECKED MY VEHICLE FOR DAMAGED TIRES OR DEBRIS UNDERNEATH AND FOUND NO SUCH DEBRIS OR DAMAGE. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT KNEW OF TSB 18-2268. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT ALMOST KILLED ME AND MY CHILDREN.

'DEATH WOBBLE' STEERING WHEN A ROAD BUMP ENCOUNTERED. FRONT SREERING DAMPER HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE (2 TIMES) PREVIOUSLY, BUT THE ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE FRONT END SHIMMY IS BACK. HAVE NEVER HAD A FORD TRUCK WITH THIS SORT OF PROBLEM. DON'T KNOW IF IT'S JUST THE DAMPENER, OR COMBINATION OF INADEQUATE SHOCKS/SUSPENSION, BUT IT'S DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. FORD MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS DESIGN DEFECT! I TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER TOMORROW FOR A 3RD ATTEMPTED FIX. VEHICLE NOW HAS 40,000 MILES, BUT, AS I SAID, THIS IS THE 3RD TIME FOR REPLACEMENT. SOMETHING STRUCTURALLY IS CAUSING THE STEERING ISSUE. I HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE FATALITIES FOR FORD TO FIND A SOLUTION.

3PE24014 · Sogefi Secondary Diesel Fuel Filter Leak
Opened May 9, 2024 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Fuel System, Diesel; Fuel System, Other:fuel Filter
The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received 27 complaints alleging diesel fuel leaks due to a fracture in the secondary fuel filter housing in model year (MY) 2015-2021 Ford Motor Company (Ford) F-250, 350, 450, and 550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with 6.7L diesel engines. Of these complaints, 12 describe an engine compartment fire. The proximity of the secondary fuel filter to high heat sources creates a potential for autoignition thermal events and fires. ODI has contacted the vehicle manufacturer, Ford, and the filter manufacturer, Allevard Sogefi USA (Sogefi), and learned that the low-pressure fuel system is capable of a maximum operating pressure of 8.5 Bar, while the secondary fuel filter is only tested to seven (7) Bar during the manufacturing process. Additionally, changes starting in 2022 by both Ford and Sogefi align with a lack of similar complaints on MY 2022 and newer vehicles. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

In January 2021, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ21-001) to assess allegations of post-recall remedy uncommanded tailgate openings in model year (MY) 2017-2019 F-250/350/450 Ford trucks. Besides the recall remedy launched in January 2020, Ford also implemented a production update in November 2019. At the time of the RQ opening, ODI had received eleven (11) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs). ODI sent an Information Request (IR) to Ford in February 2021. In numerous meetings after receiving their IR response, Ford highlighted the drop in claims since the recall and production update and communicated how they were unable to verify the owners’ complaints or replicate the concern. Despite this, Ford began developing ways to prevent uncommanded tailgate openings from various human, mechanical or electrical causes. Based on testing, Ford issued a Customer Satisfaction program, 21M05-S1/S2/S3, to further address the potential of unintended tailgate openings. This work was applied to vehicles being produced as of December 20, 2021. The program began for already delivered vehicles on July 22, 2022. The covered models include 2017-2022 F-250, 350, 450, 550, 650 and 750 Super Duty and 2020-2022 F-600 Super Duty trucks. ODI has received 39 VOQs between February 24, 2020, and December 15, 2023, alleging uncommanded tailgate openings. In a detailed analysis, none of the vehicles in the VOQs were found to have received the Customer Satisfaction update. Since ODI has not received any complaints of post-Customer Satisfaction program tailgate openings, this office is closing this Recall Query. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. By letter dated December 4, 2019, Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of a safety defect that may exist in model years (MY) 2017 through 2019 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate. Following the receipt of five consumer complaints alleging unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge, while the vehicles were in motion, NHTSA opened this investigation to assess the manufacturer's data including warranty claims, field reports, design changes, etc.In vehicles equipped with an electric tailgate, water can enter the electrical wiring system and may cause a short circuit resulting in the unintended activation and release of the tailgate latch. This could allow unintended opening of the tailgate while the vehicle is in motion.Analysis of the data provided by Ford found that the frequency of a tailgate opening unintended was high in vehicles equipped with electric tailgates. Unintended tailgate opening without vehicle operator knowledge may result in loss of unrestrained cargo, increasing the risk of a crash. In response to this investigation, Ford decided to conduct recall 19V-864.Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to modify the tailgate/frame wiring harnesses by adding jumper pigtails to isolate the tailgate release control circuits, and will install a new tailgate handle release switch. With recall action 19V-864 taken by Ford Motor Company this investigation is closed. Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other model or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope.
