I WAS DRIVING DOWN A VERY DANGEROUS HIGHWAY PASS GOING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHEN MY ENGINE STALLED AS RANDOM ALARMS STARTED APPEARING ON MY DASHBOARD, THEN MY STEERING LOCKED FROM THE ENGINE BEING OFF. I TRIED THE BEST I COULD TO GET ON THE SHOULDER AS I HAD NO STEERING ABILITY AND I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES FAIRLY HARD. I WAS LUCKY BECAUSE THIS WAS THE ONLY PLACE IN MILES WITH A SHOULDER. ANYWHERE ELSE ON THIS ROAD AND I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIED. WHILE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I SMELLED A TINY BIT OF BURNING PLASTIC WITH NO PROBLEM IN SIGHT. I GOOGLED WHAT HAPPENED ON A SPECIAL FORUM WEBSITE FOR FORD RAPTOR OWNERS AND OTHERS HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN WITH FUSE 27. WHICH IS FOR THE FUEL PUMP. SO I CHECKED THE NUMBER 27 FUSE AND SURE ENOUGH IT HAD MELTED, I ACTUALLY HAD TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE FUSE BOX IN MELTED PIECES WITH PLIERS. THE FUSE MELTED WHILE DRIVING SO THE FUEL PUMP SHUT OFF CAUSING MY ENGINE TO STALL AND STEERING TO LOCK. MANY MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD HIS HAPPEN AND FORD RECOGNIZES IT AS A SERVICE BULLETIN. HOWEVER THIS NEEDS TO BE MORE THEN A SERVICE BULLETIN WHEN SOMEONE'S LIFE COULD BE TAKEN DRIVING THE FREEWAY OR DANGEROUS ROAD. WE WERE LUCKY THERE WAS NO COLLISION, INJURIES, OR FIRE, HOWEVER IT COULD HAVE VERY WELL CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL FIRE AND IF SOMEONE WAS ON A CROWDED FREEWAY IN RUSH HOUR A COLLISION IS ALMOST CERTAIN.

I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW 1ST OCCURRENCE WAS AT APPX 50,000 MILES I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PASS ON INTERSTATE THE ENGINE STALLED STARTED RUN ROUGH AND LOST POWER THIS CORRECTED IT SELF AFTER I LET OFF THE THROTTLE IN A FEW SECONDS. IT DID THIS ONE MORE TIME A FEW DAYS LATER. TALKED TO LOCAL DEALER ASKED ABOUT FUEL FILTER, THEY SAID THERE WAS NO FILTER. THEY RECOMMENDED RUNNING FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER. I DID THIS AND CONTINUED TO DO THIS BUT ENGINE IDLED ROUGH AT STOP SIGNS EVEN IN PARK. IT FINALLY DID THE SAME THING A THIRD TIME AND THEN AGAIN FROM A STOP SIGN. I HAD SPARK PLUGS REPLACED THIS WAS AT 95,000 MILES THIS HELPED I DID NOT HAVE THE STUMBLE PROBLEM AGAIN BUT STILL IDLES ROUGH. FINALLY 2 DAYS AGO IT WAS GOING DOWN ROAD AND WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE PULLED OVER SHUT OFF AND RESTART ENGINE IT WENT INTO NORMAL MODE NO PROBLEM. I HAVE CLEANED THE MAP SENSORS ALL THREE BUT NO HELP. I DID NOTE MAP SENSORS ARE WET. I REAR IN ONE OF YOUR MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM THAT IT MAY BE CONDENSATION FROM INTER-COOLER THIS SOUNDS PLAUSIBLE. WHEN IT GOES INTO LIMP IT DOES NOT THROW A CODE SO NO WAY TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG. I HAVE SPOKE TO MY DEALER NO HELP. I HAVE NOT CALLED FORD YET. I HAVE REAR MULTIPLE (100S) OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS A LOT OF THEM ON YOUR SITE. WILL IT TAKE SOMEONE DYING FOR YOU TO FORCE FORD TO FIX THIS. THE TRUCK COST OVER 50,000 I AM STILL PAYING FOR IT AND IT IS UNSAFE. I HAD A NISSAN WITH OVER 300,000 MILES AND NO PROBLEMS DO WE NEED TO BUY FOREIGN MADE VEHICLES TO GET A GOOD PRODUCT? WILL AMERICAN COMPANIES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS? I AS A TAX PAYER BAILED OUT FORD AND GM CAN I NOT EXPECT A QUALITY MADE PRODUCT IN RETURN! I GUESS AFTER SOMEONE DIES IN A CRASH CAUSED BY THE F150 STALLING ON THE HIGHWAY THE NHTSA WILL FINALLY STEP IN AN FORCE A RECALL!!!

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO MY COMPLAINT FILED PRECIOUSLY. AFTER THE SECOND EPISODE OF LOSS OF POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON. I TOOK MY ECOBOOST POWERED TRUCK TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY PERFORMED TSB 14-0017. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX THE ENGINE LOOSING POWER. THIS IS WHY THE NHTSA CLOSED THE INVESTIGATION OF THE F150 ECOBOOST. THIS HAS NOT WORKED. YESTERDAY 11-7-2015 I WAS ON A 2 HOUR HIGHWAY TRIP IN RAINY CONDITIONS. WHILE DRIVING THE MOTOR AGAIN LOST POWER AND COULD NOT EVEN MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS WAS DANGEROUS TO MY FAMILY AND EVERYONE AROUND US. THE TSB FROM FORD HAS NOT FIXED THE DANGERS OF THESE TRUCKS. PLEASE RE-OPEN THE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS DANGEROUS VEHICLE BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR INJURED. AMERICAN ROADS DESERVE SAFE CARS.

I PURCHASED MY 2013 FORD F 150 V8, 6.2L RAPTOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO FOR THE MAIN PURPOSE OF HUNTING VERY REMOTE AREAS HERE IN MAINE. ABOUT 1 MONTH AGO, I UTILIZED THE REMOTE START TO START THE TRUCK AND DROVE TO WORK. AT NOON THAT DAY, I WENT TO START MY TRUCK, IT WOULD TURN OVER BUT NOT FIRE. CALLED AAA, THEY CHECKED THE BATTERY WHICH WAS FINE AND THEN PLACED KEY INTO DOOR TO UNLOCK AND ENGINE FIRED UP. THEN ABOUT A WEEK AGO, DURING HUNTING SEASON, I DROVE THE TRUCK INTO A GAS STATION, FILLED THE TANK, I WENT TO START THE TRUCK TO LEAVE AND THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED. I ENDED UP TAKING THE CABLE OFF OF THE BATTERY, THEN REATTACHED AND THE ENGINE FIRED UP. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO FORD, THEY STATED THAT THEY DIAGNOSED AS AS KNOWN PROBLEM. THE FUSE TO THE FUEL PUMP WILL NEED TO BE DIVERTED. I TOLD FORD THAT I WAS HEADING NORTH TO HUNT THE NEXT DAY, THEY RECOMMENDED STRONGLY THAT I GET THE ISSUE FIXED ASAP, SAID THEY COULD GET PART AND HAVE THE ISSUE REMEDIED THE NEXT DAY. I SET UP THE APPOINTMENT. FORD JUST CALLED AND SAID THE PART WAS ON BACKORDER, THEY CAN'T GET IT UNTIL NOV 30. HUNTING SEASON ENDS NOV 27TH.

FORD ROAD SIDE HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO SUMMERVILLE FORD. FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED THAT A FUSE FORM THE FACTORY WAS TOO SMALL AND WAS OVERHEATING CAUSING THE TRUCK NOT TO START. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THIS IS A KNOWN/COMMON ISSUE, AND THE FIX WAS FOR THEM TO INSTALL A FUSE RELOCATION KIT BY SPLICING INTO THE WIRING IN THE FUSE BOX AS WELL AS INSTALL A LARGER FUSE. OF COURSE THIS SEEMS LIKE AN ENGINEERING/FUSE LOCATION ISSUE AND NOT A WORN OUT PART ISSUE.

THERE WAS A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AND THE VEHICLE WOULD BARELY MOVE FORWARD WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPROGRAMMED THE TURBO-CHARGER. IT WAS RAINING AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT. ON 9/14/15 THE VEHICLE AGAIN HAD A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. IT WAS NOT RAINING AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND HAD A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. THE WRENCH SYMBOL AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE VEHICLE WOULD BARELY MOVE FORWARD WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE "THROTTLE BODY". FORD MADE BOTH REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THEY REFUSED TO REIMBURSE US FOR OUR TOWING, HOTEL AND RENTAL CAR EXPENSES INCURRED AS A RESULT OF OUR VEHICLE BREAKING DOWN.

THIS OCCURRED ON A RAINY HOT DAY SOUTHBOUND TOWARDS CAPE COD. I WAS DRIVING MY SECOND 2013 FORD F150, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE THE ECOBOOST ENGINE. I ATTEMPTED TO PASS ON A TWO LANE ROAD, AND UPON ACCELERATION THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SHUTTER, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE LOST MOST OF ITS POWER, AND VEHICLE SLOWED DRAMATICALLY. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 20 TO 30 SECONDS THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RETURN TO A NORMAL OPERATING MODE. HAD THERE BEEN ONCOMING TRAFFIC, I WOULD NOT BE WRITING THIS. AS I SAID, THIS IS MY SECOND ECOBOOST, AND I THOUGHT THAT FORD WOULD HAVE FIXED WHAT IS CLEARLY A POTENTIALLY FATAL FLAW WITH THIS ENGINE. I HAD THE SAME ISSUE OCCUR TWICE BEFORE IN MY PRIOR ECOBOOST F150. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO A DEALER TODAY FOR ANOTHER MINOR ISSUE AND ASKED THAT THE ECOBOOST ISSUE BE ADDRESSED, BUT THAT REQUEST WAS REJECTED BY THE DEALER, WHOM SIGHTED FORD POLICY. CLEARLY THERE IS A PATTERN OF FAILURE ON THESE ENGINES, AND JUST AS CLEAR IT APPEARS THERE IS AN EFFECTIVE AND ECONOMICAL FIX, BASED ON MY PERSONAL RESEARCH OF AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON LINE. IT IS UNEXPLAINABLE WHY FORD WOULD NOT GET IN FRONT OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE THERE IS A FATAL ACCIDENT. *TR

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened an investigation based on consumer allegations of transmissions unexpectedly downshifting to a lower gear without input from the driver on model year (MY) 2011-2013 Ford F-150, Expedition and Navigator vehicles. ODI has received 455 unique reports related to the alleged problem that were not covered under a previous recall for this issue (16V-248).Expedition and Navigator complaint rates are lower than F-150 complaints. Of those 455 reports, 34.7% claimed that the rear wheels locked up when the transmission downshifted. There were 4 accident claims with no injuries. There are many instances where drivers report leaving their lane or the road because of this issue. In response to ODI's Information Request (IR) letter, Ford Motor Company (Ford) responded with 783 unique reports related to the alleged problem. There were 6 accident claims with 3 injuries. Ford also submitted 1206 warranty claims related to transmission downshifting failures. The failure can occur at any time, but typically at higher speed, and include symptoms such as sudden transmission downshifting, loss of speedometer, erratic shifting of transmission, and transmission stuck in one gear. The failures typically occur without warning and may result in the rear wheels momentarily locking up. The driver often had to fully stop the vehicle and restart it to get the vehicle to shift properly. On February 2nd, 2019 Ford notified ODI that it would conduct a safety recall (19V-075) to remedy transmission downshifting failures on all 2011-2013 F-150 vehicles. Ford will also offer extended warranties to 2011-2013 Expedition and Navigator vehicles with the same issue. Per Ford, some vehicles may experience an intermittent loss of Transmission Output Speed Sensor (OSS) signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), potentially resulting in a temporary unintended downshift into first gear. Ford will reprogram the PCM with software that will prevent an unintended downshift into first gear and illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light in the event of an intermittent OSS signal loss. The recall action initiated by the manufacturer appears to address the safety risks of concern to ODI.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the identification (ODI) numbers found in the attached list.

PE13018 · Reduced Power During Hard Acceleration

Opened May 22, 2013 · Closed Apr 7, 2014

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling

On May 22, 2013, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE13-018 to investigate 95 complaints alleging incidents of reduced engine power during hard accelerations in model year (MY) 2011 through 2013 Ford F-150 trucks.ODI was aware of three technical service bulletins (TSBs) issued by Ford for a condition that was related to moisture accumulation in the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) for the turbochargers.A Preliminary Evaluation was opened to gather information to assess whether the subject vehicles contain a safety related defect. The subject vehicles are powered by Ford?s 3.5L EcoBoost engine which uses twin turbochargers to obtain a balance of fuel economy and engine power based on the driver?s demand. When the driver requests more power from the engine, as in accelerating to pass, merge, ascend hills or haul a load the two turbochargers will spin up compressing the air which is then used to increase the power created by the combustion in the engine. The compressed air, which gains heat by the compression process, is passed through a Charge Air Cooler (CAC) which is designed to lower the temperature of the air in order to make the combustion process even more efficient (Figures 1 and 2).In response to ODI?s Information Request letter, Ford indicated that a misfire condition could occur after steady-speed operation under significantly humid and rainy conditions.Ford?s analysis found that under those conditions, condensation could form and accumulate on the inside of the CAC tubes which could then be ingested into the engine during particularly hard acceleration near wide-open throttle. An engine misfire of up to three cylinders could occur if the amount of condensed water released from the CAC exceeded the engine?s operating threshold for water ingestion.Ford noted that due to regulations set by the EPA, the powertrain software would disable up to two of the misfiring cylinders for no more than 30 seconds and until the driver tips out the throttle in order to protect the catalytic converter from damage. Ford?s testing of this condition on the subject vehicles showed that a vehicle experiencing such a condition would continue to maintain its speed as well as accelerate, albeit at a lower rate than expected by the driver.Similar results were obtained in testing done by NHTSA?s Vehicle Research and Testing Center in East Liberty, Ohio (Figure 6).In an ongoing process to address the problem Ford issued a series of TSBs where a deflector shield was installed onto the CAC (Figures 3, 4 and 5).In January 2014 Ford indicated that its data shows that the TSBs have been effective in resolving the problem, that for the MY 2013 vehicles their remedy is 100% effective and the latest TSBs for MY 2011 ? 2012 are 95% effective. The 525 complaints to ODI and the total 4,120 unique VIN complaints listed in the Failure Report are incidents of alleged reduced power or driveability symptoms and not all are necessarily related to the condition created by water ingestion.Reduced power conditions can occur for a variety of reasons including faults with ignition coils, spark plugs, a catalytic converter, the throttle body, turbocharger, fuel pump/filter, powertrain control module (hardware or software) or transmission shifting problems.Ford also noted that in a large number of warranty claims on the subject vehicles, the CAC was replaced or a TSB procedure was performed when the symptoms exhibited were inconsistent with a CAC water ingestion related issue.Given these circumstances, further use of the agency resources in this matter does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of
