THE "MY FORD TOUCH" SYSTEM COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, STARTING IN NOV. 2015. THE SYSTEM CONTROLS REAR VIEW CAMERA AND HANDS FREE CELL CALLS AMONG OTHER THINGS. THE SYSTEM CAME BACK ON AND AGAIN FAILED AT VARIOUS TIMES THROUGH 2016. I HAD TO REMOVE THE BATTERY CONNECTION AND RECONNECT , AS DIRECTED IN FORD WEBSITE ( KEY RESET). IT AGAIN FAILED IN JAN 2017 AND FINALLY IT FAILED COMPLETELY MARCH 2017. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY COMMUNICATION REGARDING UPDATES TO THE SYSTEM. WHEN YOU GET USED TO THE REAR VIEW CAMERA SYSTEM AND HANDS FREE CALLS , IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN WHEN IT IS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR SENSOR IS BROKEN, CAUSING THE CAR TO KEEP INTERIOR LIGHTS ON FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS ON AND DRIVING. THIS CAUSES DIFFICULTY DRIVING IN THE DARK AS VISION IS HINDERED. THE LIGHTS ALSO STAY ON FOR 10-15 MINUTES AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND LOCKED, AND WILL ALSO COME ON AT INTERMITTENT PERIODS OF TIME WHILE THE CAR IS OFF. THIS PROBLEM CAUSES THE CAR BATTERY TO DRAIN, RESULTING IN A DEAD CAR BATTERY. THE CAR DOORS DO NOT LOCK ONCE THE CAR IS ON AND THE "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT IS INDICATED. THE "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT MAY COME ON EVERY TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN IN A DAY OR MAY ONLY COME ON PERIODICALLY OVER SEVERAL DAYS. WHEN ON, THE LIGHT INDICATOR WILL STAY ON WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONARY AND IN MOTION.

ALTHOUGH THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT DOOR IS CLOSED, "DOOR AJAR" WARNING IS STILL ILLUMINATED, CAR DOES NOT ALLOW LOCKING OF DOORS WHILE THIS WARNING APPEARS. ALSO, DOME LIGHT REMAINS ON FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, WHICH IS A HAZARD FOR NIGHT-TIME DRIVING. THIS WARNING APPEARS WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.

THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR LATCH DOES NOT CATCH. THIS CAUSES THE "DRIVERS DOOR AJAR" WARNING. THIS ALSO CAUSES THE LIGHTS TO NO TURN OFF WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND TURNED OFF. THIS RESULTING THE BATTERY BEING DRAINED. WHEN BATTERY IS DRAINED THE CAR WON'T START AND CAN LEAVE THE DRIVER STRANDED.

AND, IT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO LOCK MY DOORS, SO WHEN I DRIVE THE DOORS ARE UNLOCKED. MY GRAND DAUGHTER OPENED A BACK DOOR AT A STOP LIGHT. IN ADDITION, DUE TO THE SENSORS, THE DOME LIGHT STAYS ON AND DRAINS MY BATTERY. LOOKING THIS UP THERE ARE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. TO TEST THE ISSUE WHILE DRIVING, MY BROTHER OPENED THE DOOR ON THE INTERSTATE DOING 70 MPH. WHEN I TRY TO LOCK THE DOORS THEY REOPEN IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. IT HAPPENED 2/6/2017 AND HAS REMAINED THIS WAY.

THE REAR DRIVER-SIDE DOOR INDICATOR SWITCH HAS BECOME UNRELIABLE. IT NOW INDICATES THE REAR DRIVER-SIDE DOOR IS OPEN A MAJORITY OF THE TIME. BECAUSE THE CAR THINKS THE DOOR IS NOT CLOSED, INTERIOR LIGHTS DO NOT DIM RELIABLY AND THE DOORS NO LONGER LOCK RELIABLY. I DON'T GET THE OPTION TO DO SO UNTIL THE CAR IS WELL UNDER WAY.

1. OCTOBER 3, 2016 ' FORD EDGE "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT PROBLEMS ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) AFTER SAFETY REGULATORS RECEIVED 1,560 COMPLAINTS ABOUT 2011-2013 FORD EDGE DOOR AJAR LIGHTS THAT STAY ON AND COST A SMALL FORTUNE TO REPAIR. 2, FORD EDGE THE DOOR AJAR LIGHTS LOCATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS STAY ON ALL THE TIME EVEN WHEN ALL DOORS ARE CLOSED AND FULLY LATCHED, LEAVING OWNERS QUESTIONING IF THE DOORS ARE REALLY CLOSED. 3, OTHER PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DOOR AJAR LIGHTS STAYING ON, SUCH AS DRAINED BATTERIES FROM BOTH THE DOOR AJAR LIGHTS AND THE DOME LIGHTS STAYING ON. 4. THE DOORS WON'T LOCK WITH THE DOOR AJAR LIGHTS CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED AND OTHER OWNERS SAY THE DOORS OPEN WHILE DRIVING. NHTSA SAYS IT DOESN'T KNOW OF ANY RELATED CRASHES, BUT ONE PERSON REPORTED THEY SUFFERED INJURIES DUE TO THE PROBLEM. 5. IN ADDITION TO THE SAFETY HAZARDS CAUSED BY THE LIGHTS, OWNERS SAY THEY HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX PROBLEMS THOSE OWNERS BELIEVE SHOULD BE FIXED UNDER A FORD RECALL. HOWEVER, ONE EDGE OWNER SAID SHE WAS TOLD BY FORD THE VEHICLES HADN'T BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE THERE HADN'T BEEN ENOUGH COMPLAINTS. PLEASE NOTE WE WERE GIVEN A VERY HIGH DISCOUNT ON THE REPAIR WE WERE ORIGINALLY QUOTED $550.00!! 6. MY DRIVER DOOR AJAR LIGHT KEPT COMING ON. I DIDN'T PAY MUCH ATTENTION TO IT; HONESTLY JUST THOUGHT IT WAS A SENSOR AND I WOULD TAKE IT IN TO GET LOOKED AT. EVENTUALLY THE LIGHT STAYED ON ALL THE TIME, AND EVEN MADE MY INTERIOR LIGHT STAY ON AS WELL. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP THIS WEEK, AND IT IS NOT THE DOOR SENSOR, BUT THE DOOR LATCH. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY.

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
