MY CAR KEEPS CUTTING OFF WHILE I'M DRIVING. THE BATTER LIGHT COMES ON WITHOUT ANY WARNING. AFTER THE BATTER LIGHT COMES ON THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS STEER, THE CAR STARTS TO SLOW DOWN, I CAN'T EXCEL AT ALL, RAIDO AND ALL LIGHTS CUT OFF AS WELL. ONCE THE CAR COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP, I'LL START IT BACK UP SOMETIMES IT'LL START RIGHT BACK UP, OR I'LL HAVE TO HOLD THE KEY DOWN A FEW SECONDS FOR IT TO START. THE CAR HAVE STOPPED ON ME WHILE DRIVING MOVE THAN 5 TIMES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND THE FIRST FEW TIME THEY SAID AFTER THEY RAN ALL OF THE TEST THEY COULDN'T GET THE VEHICLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER TIME THEY ASKED COULD THEY KEEP THE VEHICLE OVER NIGHT AND HAVE A MECHANIC DRIVE THE CAR HOME AND BACK TO WORK. THE NEXT DAY WHEN I WENT TO GO PICK UP MY VEHICLE THEY SAID THEY KINDA-SORTA GOT THE CAR TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM THOSE WERE THERE EXACT WORDS. THEN THEY PUT A MONITOR IN MY CAR THEY TOLD ME TO PRESS THE BUTTON WHILE I WAS DRIVING IF THE CAR WAS TO GO OUT SO THEY CAN RECORD THE PROBLEM. THE MONITOR WAS IN MY CAR FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND MY CAR DIDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. A FEW WEEKS AFTER THEY TOOK THE MONITOR OUT MY CAR CUT OFF ON ME AGAIN AND TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND THEY RAN THE SAME TEST AND THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT. ANOTHER TIME MY CAR WENT OFF I TOOM IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT MY CAR WAS HALFWAY EMPTY ON OIL AND THEY'RE TELLING ME THAT MY CAR IS CUTTING OFF BECAUSE IT NEEDS OIL AND THEY WERE GOING TO MONITOR THE OIL. SO THEY SENT ME BACK ON THE ROAD AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK WHEN MY CAR GOT TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MILES THEY HAD WROTE DOWN , WHEN MY CAR GOT TO THAT AMOUNT OF MILES THAT THEY HAVE WROTE DOWN I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I TOLD HIM TO TELL ME IF I NEEDED AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY TOLD ME I DIDNT. NOVEMBER 1 2015 WHILE TRAVELING ON PARKWAY 376 IN PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA . I BECAME TRAPPED BEHIND A PORTION OF A TREE THAT HAD MADE IT'S WAY IN THE LANE I ENTER THE PARKWAY. AFTER BEING FORCED TO STOP, AND PUT HAZARDS ON AND ATTEMPT TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. I WAS REAR ENDED BY A GMC ENVOY TRAVELING AT LEAST 55 MPH , FORCING ME INTO TREE I WAS TRYING TO AVOID .MY PASSENGER AND I LEFT IN EMS VEHICLES, MY CAR WAS RETURNED TO MONROEVILLE DODGE FOR REPAIRS. AFTER GETTING MY CAR BACK I NOTICED WHEN IT RAIN, OR SNOW THE TRUNK OF CAR WOULD GET WET. WHENEVER OPERATING THE CAR IN SPEEDS 35 MPH OR MORE , YOU COULD FEEL AIR COMING THROUGH BACKSEAT. AFTER RETURNING THE CAR TO DODGE FOR INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY FOUND NOTHING TO CAUSE PROBLEM. CAR WAS INSPECTED AND PASS WITH ONLY REQUIRING 2 REAR TIRES. AUGUST 2 2016 , WHILE AT A STOP SIGN, A DRIVER DRIVING A 2005 HONDA PILOT WITH ORIGINAL GRILL , REAR ENDED THE CAR, AT THIS TIME I DROVE MY CAR HOME, IN THE MORNING I NOTICED TIRES WERE BENT OUTWARD. AFTER FILING A CLAIM WITH THE DRIVER"S INSURANCE CO, I LEARNED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT ALIGNED AFTER REAR END HIT ON NOV 1 2015 THAT CAUSED CAR TO SLAM INTO THE TREE ON PARKWAY. AFTER THE INSURED FIX ONLY BODY , FOUND NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MECHANICAL DAMAGE, ONCE AGAIN THE CAR WAS REPAIR WITHOUT WHEEL ALIGNMENT BY MONROEVILLE DODGE AND OFFERED BACK FOR OPERATING ON ROAD. AFTER TAKING THE REPAIR STATEMENT TO OTHER AUTO BODY REPAIR SHOPS, AND PICTURES OF BOTH REAR END ACCIDENTS , I WAS ADVISED THE CAR COULD HAVE SUSTAINED FRAME DAMAGES FROM NOV 1 2015, MAKING IT UNABLE TO BE PROPERLY ALIGN AND UNSAFE FOR OPERATING. I'M CURRENTLY STILL IN A RENTAL CAR MY CAR IS STILL AT DODGE WITH NO WHEEL ALIGNMENT REPAIRS AFTER NEITHER ACCIDENT . DODGE HAS TOLD BOTH INSURANCE COMPANIES ,(STATE FARM NOV 1 2015, AND GEICO AUG 2, 2016) WHEEL ALLIGNMENT WAS NOT NEEDED. PLEASE HELP

AROUND 1AM AFTER COMING BACK HOME FROM WORK GOING 60MPH, I HEARD A LOUD CLUNK IN MY STEERING WHEEL AND I DECIDED TO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO IT BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS THE ROAD. I TRIED TO SWITCH LANES, WHEN SUDDENLY I COULDN'T MOVE MY STEERING WHEEL AT ALL. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME SO I STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AS SOON AS I HIT ABOUT 13MPH MY STEERING WHEEL BECAME UNSTUCK AND I WAS ABLE TO MOVE AGAIN. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT TO HUNTER DODGE IN LANCASTER CA AND WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. ABOUT 3 DAYS LATER, I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 60MPH AGAIN AND MY CAR STARTED TO DRIFT INTO THE DIRT WHILE I WAS GOING BACK HOME. I TRIED RE-CENTERING MY CAR TO THE CENTER, BUT MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED ONCE MORE AND I STARTED GOING INTO THE DIRT. I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES AND LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE I HIT A TREE. I TOOK IT BACK A 2ND TIME AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN AND THEY HAD IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEY STILL DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. LUCKILY THE TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED I WAS ALONE IN THE CAR. INAM.GLAD TO SAY THAT MY FAMILY AND MY SOON TO BE WIFE WASN'T IN THAT CAR. I CANNOT DRIVE MY CAR TO LA BECAUSE OF THE FEAR THAT MY STEERING WHEEL MAY LOCK UP ON ME WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. PLEASE HELP.

RQ25002 · Recall 19V-293 Post Remedy Failures

Opened Jun 30, 2025 · Closed Dec 12, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Power Train:automatic Transmission:lever And Linkage:floor Shift; Power Train:shift Linkage/cable/rod; Power Train:shift Linkage/cable/rod:retaining Fasteners/hardware

On June 30, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ25002 to investigate and review the effectiveness of Recall 19V-293. This recall was intended to address deterioration and detachment of shifter cable bushings by replacing them with an improved bushing that is less susceptible to deterioration from chemicals, oils, and solvents in MY2013-2016 Dodge Dart vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and manufactured by Fiat Chrysler Automotive US LLC (FCA US). If the shifter cable becomes detached from the transmission, the transmission gear position may not match the driver’s intended gear selection. This mismatch could result in unintended vehicle movement or rollaway when the driver believes the transmission is in PARK, increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury. ODI has received sixty-three (63) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) alleging worn or misadjusted shifter cables and/or shifter cable detachments in subject vehicles that had already received the remedy for Recall 19V-293. Complainants reported incidents of bushing deterioration and detachment, resulting in gear-selection mismatch despite the prior recall repair, raising concerns regarding the effectiveness and durability of the implemented remedy and the adequacy of the recall. ODI’s investigation sought to determine whether the remedy used in recall 19V-293 adequately addressed the cause of the failure and whether other vehicles using the same bushing design might be affected. In response, FCA US and Dura Automotive Systems Inc. (Dura) determined that the repair for Recall 19V-293 did not sufficiently address the issue, and therefore, a safety defect exists in the subject vehicle population. As a result, FCA US and Dura initiated the following recall actions: ·         Recall 25V-674 (FCA US) is intended to address MY 2013–2016 Dodge Dart vehicles repaired under 19V-293 or otherwise equipped with suspect service parts. Remedy is under development. ·         Recall 25E-065 (Dura) is intended to address the defect at the equipment level by recalling affected gearshift control cable assemblies distributed as service components. Remedy is under development. The recalls initiated by FCA US (25V-674), and Dura Automotive Systems Inc. (25E-065) were received prior to ODI sending an Information Request (IR) letter to FCA. These two recalls seem to resolve the concerns that prompted investigation RQ25002 by replacing the previously recalled and service-supplied shifter cable assembly with an improved design, currently under development. The vehicle scope concern identified in this query was addressed by the new recalls including all Model Year 2013–2016 Dodge Dart vehicles produced and equipped with the affected shifter cable assembly. Accordingly, ODI is closing Investigation RQ25002. The agency will continue to monitor field performance and recall completion data to evaluate the effectiveness of the new remedy. ODI reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
