2020 Dodge Charger

The A/C evaporator core in my 2020 Dodge Charger Hellcat has failed twice within a short period of ownership. The first failure occurred at approximately 20K miles in 2022, when the air conditioning suddenly stopped blowing cold air. The dealership diagnosed a leaking evaporator core and replaced it under warranty. On [XXX] at approximately 50k, the exact same failure occurred again — loss of refrigerant and no cooling. The vehicle again required replacement of the evaporator core, a repair that involves removing the entire dashboard and is extremely labor-intensive and expensive. This appears to be a recurring defect rather than normal wear. I have learned that many other Dodge Charger and Challenger owners report identical evaporator failures, often multiple times, suggesting a possible design or manufacturing flaw with the HVAC evaporator used in these vehicles. Loss of A/C may seem like a comfort issue, but in extreme heat it can create a driver-safety risk due to overheating, window defogging problems, and driver fatigue. I live in Arizona where daytime temperatures regularly climb above 80 degrees, even in the winter. A major component like an evaporator should not repeatedly fail in a late-model vehicle. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether 2019–2022 Dodge Charger/Challenger vehicles are experiencing an abnormal rate of evaporator core failures that may warrant a recall, extended warranty, or technical service bulletin. Through conversations with a Dodge Certified Tech, this is ongoing and known issue with Dodge (RAM) trucks, dodge chargers etc. Curious as to why a safety recall has not been issued, with reports and complaints found online spanning back 2-3 years now. My car, after just 2 years of ownership, the windshield wipers have failed in operation. For 1 month, intermittent wiper functions were non-existent, 3 clicks would only get me "on all the time, slow speed", nothing else. As of yesterday 11/01/22, when I used turn signals to change lanes on highway, my wipers turned on to slow speed and would not shut off. (Turn signals and wipers on same lever, left side of steering column). I have had to pull the relay/fuse for wipers to get them to shut off. As I understand it, per NC state law, as part of safety inspection, windshield wipers have to be operational for it to be legal on the roadway. So now I am potentially operating a vehicle that should not be on the roadway. Dealership can't get me into a shop until 1 week or more out, no guarantee on parts due to manufacturing delays and backorders. Another note, my car insurance company refuses to allow me a rental vehicle, when I pay hundreds of dollars every year, with no filed claims. This issue should be looked into for a safety recall, with a number of reports being shown, and within some states, legally takes the vehicle off the road, unable to be driven. While traveling on the highway at approx. 70mph at night the vehicle shutdown completely resulting in the loss of throttle, power steering and lights. This is an safety issue that can cause death or serious bodily harm to the driver and other drivers along a motorway as the vehicle is no longer able to be seen in low light situations and the vehicle is unable to be properly controlled due to the loss of power steering. Issue was deemed due to loose bolts for the power distribution center.

STARTED WITH RADIO AND DASH GAUGES RESETTING TO ZERO WHILE DRIVING. MOST RECENTLY, THE CAR RESTARTED WHILE DRIVING. DURING THE RESTART THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE HALT. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE ON A CAR LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OLD AND JUST AT 3,500. AS THIS IS INTERMITTENT, DIFFICULT TO TELL WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER A MONTH. DATE CHOSEN WAS THE DATE THE CAR ACTUALLY PERFORM A COMPLETE RESTART AND MAKING IT A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE.
