I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH FCA SINCE 8/31/16, SO FOR 28 DAYS NOW, THAT I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT POWER STEERING. I FILED MY FIRST COMPLAINT ON, OR AROUND 9/12/16. I EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS AS STATED IN NHTSA PE14022 WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT APPORXIMATELY 65MPH. EVERY WARNING LIGHT WENT OFF FLASHING, SERVICE TRANSMISSION MESSAGE, SERVICE POWER STEERING , AND TACH, AND SPEEDO WOULD DROP TO ZERO , AND I WOULD LOSE ENGINE POWER, AND POWER STEERING. I CAPTURED THE INCIDENT ON VIDEO, AND PROVIDED THE VIDEO TO NHTSA, I WILL AGAIN PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE VIDEO HERE : HTTPS://YOUTU.BE/E96HVQPEP10 . IN DEALING WITH FCA LLC, THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING PUMP THAT WAS FRIED FROM THIS INCIDENT OCCURING. FCA IS SAYING THAT IT WAS THE "2 YEAR OLD MOPAR BATTERY" THAT CAUSED THE INCIDENT, AND REFUSE TO REPLACE THE EHPS PUMP THAT WORKED PERFECTLY FINE BEFORE THIS OCCURED. I REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR PER NHTSA RECALL NO. 14V-634 A GREAT DEAL OF TIME PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT OCCURING. FCA IS TRYING TO CIRCUMVENT HAVING TO REPLACE THE PUMP BY CHANGING THE ORIGIN OF THE MEANS TO THE BATTERY, INSTEAD OF THE ALTERNATOR. I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED WITH HOW FCA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE ALL OF THE PROOF GIVEN TO THEM. I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS, THERE HAD BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS FILED WITH SIMILAR RESULTS AS MINE IN DEALING WITH FCA. IT'S TIME FOR NHTSA TO DO SOMETHING TO REMEDY THIS ISSUE WITH FCA. FCA OFFERED TO REPLACE THE $1400 EHPS PUMP IF I PAY A $500 CO-PAY, I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS OFFER BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF THE MATTER. THE TRUE ORIGIN OF ALL OF THE ISSUE'S I'M CURRENTLY HAVING, IS FROM THE ORIGINAL ALTERNATOR THAT WAS IN THE CAR FOR A YEAR AND A HALF INITIALLY, AND DURING THAT TIME IT WAS IMPROPERLY CHARGING THE BATTERY THAT POSSIBLY CAUSED THE BATTERY TO ULTIMATELY FAIL ON 8/31/16. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED FILES. FAILURE MILEAGE 81332

ON AUGUST 29TH 2016 I WAS RETURNING(DRIVING ON US20) HOME FROM SOME OFFICIAL BUSINESS, WHEN MY DASH STARTED FLASHING, ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WOULD FLASH, THE SPEED DISPLAYED WOULD GO UP, AND DOWN , AND THE CAR STARTED CHANGING GEARS. THERE WAS A TICKING SOUND COMING FROM MY GEAR SHIFT, LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO SELECT GEAR. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT , AND SERVICE TRANSMISSION MESSAGE KEEP COMING UP AS WELL. I WOULD INTERMITTENLY LOSE POWER STEERING DURING THIS, AND POWER FROM THE ENGINE WOULD LAG ALSO. I HAVE A THREE MINUTE, AND THIRTY-FIVE SECOND VIDEO OF WHAT WAS OCCURING. I CONTACTED SOME MECHANIC FRIENDS THAT WORK ON INDIANA STATE POLICE CHARGERS, AND THEY THOUGHT IT COULD BE THE BATTERY SHORTING OUT. THE NEXT MORNING I REPLACED THE BATTERY, AND INSTALLED PROPERLY WITH POSITIVE POST FIRST. THIS SEEM TO RESOLVE THE DASH FLASHING SYMPTOMS, BUT I THEN HAD NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. I TOOK TO OUR LOCAL DODGE DEALER IN LAGRANGE, IN THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS, AND DETERMINED THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING PUMP WAS NO GOOD. THE POWER STEERING PUMP WORKED PERFECTLY FINE WITH NO ISSUES AT ALL, EVER, BEFORE THESE ELECTRICAL ISSUES OCCURED. THIS VEHICLE IS USED TO TRANSPORT THE US CONGRESSMAN, WHEN HE IS IN THE DISTRICT ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS, AND WE NEED IT REPAIRED ASAP. IT IS MY OPINION, THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS DESTROYED BY THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES CONCERNING THE RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO MY OPINION THAT FAC LLC SHOULD REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AT NO COST PER THE CONSENT ORDER PERTAINING TO THIS RECALL. I AM TRYING TO GET THE VIDEO TO EMAIL, AT THIS POINT, THE VIDEO IS TO LONG TO EMAIL.

WHILE DRIVING AND PREPARING TO TURN MY VEHICLE TOOK CONTROL AND I WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO BREAK OR TURN. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NOBODY IN THE NEIGHBOR AT THE TIME AND WITH LESS THAN A FOOT FROM HITTING THE STOP SIGN I WAS ABLE TO STOP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED (1.5 YEARS PRIOR)AND THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG JUST NEEDED A NEW BATTERY. I INSISTED THIS WAS NOT THE ISSUE SO THE MANAGER HAD HIS ASSOCIATE TEST DRIVE TO COME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION THE STEERING AND BRAKE SYSTEM IS FINE. NOT HAPPY I LEFT AFTER PURCHASING THE BATTERY AND HERE WE ARE 1.5 WEEKS LATER WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I TRIED TO DRIVE OUT OF WORK YESTERDAY AND I LOST CONTROL TO MY STEERING AND IT LOCKED. I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND TRIED ONCE MORE THE SAME THING HAPPENED, I THEN TRY TO RESTART BUT IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO DO SO. I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND IT STARTED. NOT FEELING SAFE FOR MY LIFE I LEFT THE CAR AT WORK AND STILL DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE IT. FROM WHAT I AM READING I AM NOT THE ONLY 2014 DODGE CHARGER HAVING THIS ISSUE. I NEED THIS FIXED IF I WAS ON THE FREEWAY WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

THE BATTERY SAVER MODE COMES ON, AND THEN THE STEERING GETS HARD, THE ALT. HAS BEEN REPLACE, EXTRA WIRING ADDED TO ADD MORE GROUNDS. THIS AFFECTS THE WAY THE CAR DRIVES. WHEN THE BATTERY SAVER MODE IS ON THE POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING OR WORKS LESS. THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK AND PINION HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS EVERY DAY, IN TOWN OR ON THE FREEWAY. 2. THE RADIO KEEPS SHORTING OUT, IT'S BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES. THIS HAPPENS DAILY, IT QUITS, BLEW OUT THE SPEAKERS, NAVAGTION STOPPED WORKING. 3. THE HEATER KEEPS GETTING STUCK ON EITHER 100% HOT OR 100% A/C ON COLD. SETTINGS WILL NOT CHANGE. CONTROLS HAVE BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES, THE HEAT/COLD DOOR MOTOR WAS REPLACE TWICE. THE CAR HAS SPENT 185 DAYS IN SERVICE THIS YEAR. WHEN THEY GIVE THE CAR BACK IT ACTS UP IN ABOUT 5 MINS. THE CAR IS GOING BACK IN FOR THE RADIO AND BATTERY SAVER MODE AND STEERING ON MONDAY. I PICKED THE CAR UP FRIDAY AND IT FAILED LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE DEALERSHIP.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. EA16002 · Vehicle Rollaway, Engine On

Opened Feb 3, 2016 · Closed Jun 24, 2016

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Power Train:automatic Transmission:gear Position Indication (prndl)

On April 22, 2016, Fiat Chrysler Automotive US LLC, (FCA) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA regarding a defect that could result in unattended vehicle rollaway with the engine running in approximately 811,586 model year (MY) 2012 to 2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles and MY 2014 to 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 8-speed transmissions and a monostable gear selector (NHTSA Recall #16V-240, FCA Recall #S27). According to FCA's DIR, The existing strategies built into these vehicles to deter drivers from exiting the vehicle after failing to put the transmission into PARK have not stopped some from doing so. Drivers erroneously concluding that their vehicle's transmission is in the PARK position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged. The vehicles recalled by FCA are equipped with Monostable electronic (shift-by-wire) gearshift assemblies supplied by ZF Group (see Figure 1).The subject Monostable shifter has a single neutral position that it snaps back to when the driver releases the shift knob.Although the Monostable gearshift has the familiar appearance of a conventional console mechanical gearshift assembly, it has an unfamiliar movement that does not provide the tactile or visual feedback that drivers are accustomed to receiving from conventional shifters.Consequently, the driver must take additional time to verify that the desired gear position was achieved by checking the PRNDL display on the shift knob or the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) display.
