2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE LT WAS FIRST TOLD AROUND APRIL 2014 FOLLOWING AN OIL CHANGE AT MY LOCAL GM CERTIFIED DEALER THAT THERE WAS A LEAK AROUND THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM (I CANNOT REMEMBER THE EXACT TERM USED). ANYWAY, THE SERVICE TECH SAID THAT IT WAS CLEARLY A SLOW LEAK AND NOT CAUSING ANY URGENT PROBLEMS, BUT THAT I SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO IT SHOULD THINGS CHANGE. THE NEXT 2 OR 3 OIL CHANGES, THE SAME ISSUE WAS NOTED. DURING A ROUTINE OIL CAHNGE MAY 2105, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A SEAL LEAK TO THE ENGINE OF SOME SORT BUT IT WAS 'WARRANTIED'. SO, I AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR, OF A LEAK THAT I NEVER NOTICED/HAD ISSUE WITH. FAST FORWARD TO JULY 2015 (68,000 +/- MILES) AND MY POWER STEERING IS LEAKING PUDDLES, THE RESIVOIR REMAINS FULL, AND SUDDENLY LOSE ALL POWER STEERING CAPABILITIES. CALL SAME GM DEALER I ALWAYS USE, AS I NOTICE ON THE UNRELATED REPAIR IN MAY, THE POWER STEERING COMPONENTS WERE MESSED WITH, FLUSHED, ETC. TO ALLOW FOR PROPER REPAIR OF OTHER ISSUE. I WAS TOLD ABOUT A 'WARRANTY EXTENSTION' FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND TO BRING IT IN, IT SHOULD BE A COVERED REPAIR BASED ON THE NOTES THE SERVICE TECH COULD READ PERTAINING TO MY VEHICLE. CALL BACK TODAY (8/3) AND AM TOLD THAT WHILE THE PUMP IS COVERED, NOTHING ELSE IS (DESPITE FROM MY RESEARCH THE PUMP FAILURE IS LIKELY CAUSING THE OTHER NOTED ISSUES) AND THE REPAIR FOR THE RACK/GEAR BOX + ALIGNMENT + FLUSHING + WHATEVER ELSE HE RATTLED OFF TO ME, WOULD BE AT MY EXPENSE, WITH A QUOTE OF $2100+/- FROM EVERYTHING I HAVE READ AND RESEARCHED, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON ISSUE THAT GM REFUSES TO ADDRESS IN ORDER TO PROPERLY REPAIR AT THEIR EXPENSE VS. THE EXPENSE OF VEHICLE OWNER. CLEARLY THIS IS A MASSIVE AND WIDESPREAD GM ISSUE WITH VEHICLES IN THIS CLASS .. UPDATED 09/30/15*BF *CN

ALSO, THE TWO PUMPS WENT OUT THAT PUMP OUT THE WASHER FLUID, THEY SAID IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE, THIS IS A FOUR YEAR OLD VEHICLE, IT SHOULD NOT BE HAVING SO MANY ELECTRICAL ISSUES HAPPENING. THEY WANT ANOTHER $500 TO FIX IT. BOTH THIS ARE HUDGE CONCERNS GIVEN IT IS A 4 YEAR OLD CAR AND THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY CONCERN.

WE BOUGHT THE 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE USED WITH 99,000 MILES ON IT. WE NOTICED THAT ON THE CAR FAX, OTHER THAN JUST ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, THE CAR HAD ITS FUEL TANK REPLACED. WE QUESTIONED IT, BUT DID NOT THINK WE WOULD HAVE PROBLEMS, AS THE CAR WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF. EVERY SINCE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, WHEN WE FILL UP THE CAR, IT DOES NOT REGISTER ON THE FUEL GAUGE CORRECTLY, IF IT REGISTERS AT ALL. WE CANNOT TAKE LONG TRIPS IN THE CAR WITHOUT HAVING TO STOP EVERY SO OFTEN AND PUT GAS IN IT, AS WE DONT KNOW HOW MUCH IS IN THERE AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN TO US. I SEE THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE 2014 VEHICLES, BUT I ALSO SEE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED ALOT WITH THE 2011 TRAVERSE'S, BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I AM HOPING WITH THIS ADDITIONAL COMPLAINT AND ONGOING PROBLEM, THAT SOMETHING WILL BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT, IF THEY HAVENT ALREADY. I DO NOT KNOW WHO THE PREVIOUS OWNER OF MY VEHICLE WAS, BUT THEY OBVIOUSLY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, HENSE REPLACING THE FUEL TANK. CHEVY, PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS.

A FEW DAYS LATER SAME THING HAPPENED. AFTER THIS INCIDENT IT HAPPENED EVEN MORE. I'VE BEEN READING BLOGS RE THIS AND E MAILED CHEVY, SAID IT WASN'T A RECALL..I DON'T KNOW WHY. THIS PROBLEM COULD KILL SOMEONE. I HAD IT FIXED AT THE CHEVY DEALER COSTING OVER $400. FROM WHAT I'VE READ I THINK THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED IN SOME EARLIER TRAVERSES. IT'S LIKE YOU PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE GAS AND THE CAR DOESN'T GO ANYWHERE. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSY. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING!! THEY WILL WIND UP WITH LAWSUITS IF THIS ISN'T TAKEN CARE OF. AFTER E MAILING CHEVY I WAS TOLD SOMEONE FROM THE DEALER I HAD THE REPAIRS DONE AT WOULD CALL TO DISCUSS. THAT NEVER HAPPENED. I DID CALL THE DEALER MANY TIMES TO NO AVAIL.

I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LOW GROWLING NOISE THAT SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL AS I TURNED CORNERS. IN APRIL 2015, I WAS HAVING THE DEALERSHIP PERFORM THE 30,000 MILE MAINTENANCE AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK TO SEE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE NOISE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE STEERING GEAR WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD CAUSE THE POWER STEERING TO FAIL TO WORK IN WHICH CASE I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO STEER AND IT WAS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR--ABOUT $850 FOR LABOR AND $700 FOR THE PART AND THEY DID HAVE THE PART IN STOCK. THE TRAVERSE HAD 31,110 MILES ON IT. BUT, WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE I HAD BOUGHT IT IN SEPT. 2010. I DECIDED TO HAVE IT FIXED. THIS SHOULDN'T HAPPEN AT 31,000 MILES. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF I DIDN'T HAVE IT REPAIRED. I CALLED THE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER IN THE OWNERS' MANUAL AND A CASE WAS FILED WITH THEM. A SENIOR ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT SHE WOULD CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT IT. BUT, THAT THE WARRANTY TIME HAD PASSED AND THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY DIDN'T COVER IT. THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE PART IN STOCK IMPLIES THEY SEE THESE FAILURES OFTEN. THE LABOR WAS 8.6 HOURS IMPLIES A POOR DESIGN. SHE SAID THE DEALERSHIP WOULD CALL ME. THEY DID FINALLY CALL TO REITERATE THAT IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THE SENIOR ADVISOR I SPOKE WITH AT GM SAID SHE WISHED I HAD CALLED HER BEFORE I HAD THE REPAIR MADE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANT. DID SHE MEAN THEY WOULD HAVE COVERED PART OF THE COST? DID SHE MEAN THAT I SHOULD WAIT UNTIL I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND HAD OR CAUSED AN ACCIDENT? I DON'T KNOW. MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE PURCHASED MANY GM VEHICLES SINCE 1969 AS SHE NOTED. AS I REVIEWED THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THEM WERE ABOUT STEERING GEAR FAILURES. IT'S TIME GM DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. ...UPDATED08/20/15 *BF UPDATED 10/26/2017*CN

THERE SEEMS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE STEERING RACK WITH THE CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE 2 YEARS THAT I AM AWARE OF ARE THE 2010 AND 2011 TRAVERSE. CHEVY DEALERS ARE CHARGING OVER $1000 TO REPAIR BUT WAS CONCERNED THAT THERE SHOULD BE AN INVESTIGATION INTO A POTENTIAL RECALL SITUATION.

2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE- I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN 2013 CERTIFIED, PRE-OWNED FOR ROUGHLY $35K ALL IN FROM ROBERT CHEVROLET. HAVE HAD SEVERAL ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ISSUES WITH IT OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS. WINDOWS HAVE STOPPED WORKING NUMEROUS TIMES, MIRRORS AS WELL. LEFT TAIL LIGHT HAS GONE OUT 3 TIMES, HEADLIGHTS HAVE HAD ISSUES AS WELL. MOST RECENTLY MY PASSENGER SIDE STEP RAIL SNAPPED OFF AS MY 13 YEAR OLD 115 LB DAUGHTER STEPPED ON IT. I HAVE 4 CHILDREN, MY YOUNGEST IS ONE AND A HALF YEARS OLD AND ONE CONCERN I HAVE IS THAT THE OTHER SIDE RAIL SNAPS OFF AND AS MY WIFE IS PUTTING MY SON IN CAR THEY FALL ON CONCRETE IF THAT RAIL SHOULD SNAP AS WELL. IN GENERAL, I DO NOT TRUST THIS CAR OR FEEL SAFE IN IT AT ALL. THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS SCARE ME THE MOST, GOD FORBID THERE SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF SHORT AND STEERING OR SOMETHING WORSE GOES OUT AND MY WIFE CRASHES WITH ONE OR ALL OF MY 4 CHILDREN IN THE CAR.. MY SALES REP AT ROBERT CHEVROLET HAS BEEN CONTACTED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, FOR A YEAR HAS BEEN TELLING US TO COME IN AFTER SEVERAL COMPLAINTS. FINALLY I TOOK OFF OF WORK AND TOLD HIM HE NEEDED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE AND IT NEEDED TO BE ADDRESSED. THEY ASSURED ME THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT, EVEN SUGGESTED HE WOULD TAKE ME OUT OF THE CAR AND EAT THE BULK OF THE LOSS. NEEDLESS TO SAY THEY DID NONE OF THAT, INDICATED EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG WITH THE CAR IS WEAR AND TEAR. I BOUGHT AN EXTENDED POLICY ON THE VEHICLE AS WELL, BASICALLY NOTHING IS COVERED. AND TO BOOT, THEY SUGGESTED I PAY 1200-1500 TO FIX THE VEHICLE. AGAIN I STRESS, THE MONEY ISN'T THE BIGGEST ISSUE, I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE.

EA20002 · Outboard Front Seat Belt Anchor Cable Failure

Opened Aug 31, 2020 · Closed Aug 30, 2024

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts; Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage

On August 31, 2020, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA) EA20002, as an upgrade of Recall Query (RQ) RQ19003. This investigation, related to recall 14V-266, was opened to investigate instances of detachment of the flexible steel seat belt anchor cable attached to the outboard side of the front seats in vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM). The subject vehicles included model year (MY) 2009 through 2014 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs as well as MY 2009 through 2010 Saturn Outlook SUVs. These vehicles were previously repaired for this defect under recall 14V-266. The subject vehicle population is approximately 1.3 million vehicles. Special Coverage N192219480, issued in June 2019, addressed the subject defect in vehicles that previously received the recall remedy repair for subject recall 14V-266. The Special Coverage allows for component replacement for 12 years or 180,000 miles from the initial sale date, whichever comes first. Special Coverage N192219480 instructed service technicians to inspect the driver’s seat belt anchor cable for any damage to the protective sleeve and if damage was observed, the cable was replaced with a new sleeve as well as a new closeout piece that relocated the cable to mitigate the subject condition. In view of the Special Coverage conducted by General Motors, the high detectability of the subject failure, and the low rate of occurrence, this Engineering Analysis is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov. Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts:front; Seat Belts:front:anchorage; Seat Belts:pretensioner

On May 19, 2014, General Motors LLC (GM) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) that it would conduct Safety Recall 14V266 to address fatigue and separation of the flexible steel cable that connects the front outboard seat belts to the seat-mounted belt pre-tensioner in 1.4 million model year (MY) 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2014 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse (Lambda Platform) vehicles. The remedy was to inspect for signs of damage and replace pre-tensioner anchor cables as needed. Re-work was conducted to relocate the pre-tensioner anchor cable out of the occupant entry path. ODI has subsequently received four (4) Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQ) reporting anchor cable separations with no apparent warning in covered vehicles after the Recall 14V266 remedy had been applied.ODI opened RQ19-003 to assess the effectiveness of the actions GM took in Recall 14V266 and review the full warranty and complaint data related to seat belt anchor cable separations and replacements. ODI continues to receive occasional cable failure complaints both for the subject vehicles and other GM models and model years that have also been previously recalled addressing this condition.Although the cable separation complaint rate is very low, over the past three years ODI has received two (2) additional VOQ?s citing belt cable separations for Lambda platform vehicles outside the scope of recall 14V266, (11217092, 11118075) and complaints for other GM models covered in a number of similar Safety Recalls:* 15V269, 2011-12 Chevrolet Malibu (11181115, 11288168); * 16V209, 2014-15 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 (11254364, 10935183, 10953851, 11025376, 11282043, 11288701, 11309884); and * 16V518 2014-16 Caprice Police Pursuit, SS (10905644, 10990669, 11340893).ODI's review of GM's data confirms the low potential failure rate for the vehicles covered by recall 14V266. However, ODI believes that complainants may not recognize accumulating cable fatigue damage from the visual cues available in routine vehicle use.ODI is upgrading RQ19-003 to an Engineering Analysis to more closely assess seat belt conditions and strength levels in the field. This work will include the collection of seat belt samples from a wider range of recalled and peer vehicles for detailed analysis and testing. The ODI reports (VOQs) associated with this RQ19-003 can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers: 11144704, 11076704, 11185619, 11151922, 11164011, 10967518, 11113486, 11115648
