I was driving on the freeway and smelled gasoline in the cab. I thought nothing of it as I was near a wreck and thought it was from that. About 10 miles down the road I was stopped in traffic and noticed my miles until empty was slowly declining as I was stopped. When I moved forward there was a puddle under my truck. I pulled to the side of the road and fuel was draining from the back of my engine all over the exhaust. I immediately shut the truck off. I cannot believe the gas didn't ignite as those catalytic converters get well over 536°. The truck was towed to the closest Chevrolet dealer over 10 days ago and I have YET to hear anything from them. I bought the truck used from another Chevrolet dealer 3 weeks prior, and it has had the L87 recall.

While driving down the road I let off the accelerator to start applying brakes for a red light I was approaching, then the vehicle shut completely off and down shifted hard. After that it restarted a second later but had no power steering and no brakes. At this point I was approaching the red light with no brakes and power of my vehicle, the other traffic had a green light now and was crossing my lane of travel but I was luckily able to make it through the light in between vehicles without causing any harm to myself or others. After making it through the light I was rolling 10mph still helpless but seen a gas station on my right and rolled into their parking lot and drove towards a curb and used the curb to stop my vehicle. The vehicle had the following warning lights and messages: Lane Change Alert System Off, Brake system failure 62mph top speed, service traction control, service ESC, and trailer brakes disabled service required. I then got the vehicle towed to the dealership while still on and in the running position with all the codes still active. The dealer was able to scan the truck in and see the codes but told me they wouldn’t be able to get to it till the following week so they parked the vehicle and turned it off. When they got to my vehicle the following week they sent me a text and said I quote “Hey ****** its **** from Chevy, I do not have the best news lol he can not get it to act up and there are no current codes he has driven and nothing has happened, as of now there is nothing further he can do”. After receiving that text I called them to just be told they can’t get it to do it again and there is nothing they can do. But I told them I refuse to pick up this vehicle because it had a critical safety issue. This vehicle suffered a catastrophic failure, brakes and steering were lost in an intersection. If not diagnosed properly, this poses a threat to life.

The symptoms since the beginning of 2024 have been that when braking between 7 and 10 mph, you feel a bump or a skid, and when you stop, the engine shakes for a moment as if it's going to shut off. This happens with the Auto Stop-Start off. A sudden braking moment can affect the vehicle's performance, making it difficult to control and increasing the risk of accidents, especially when it comes to a pickup truck that may have a trailer with cargo or objects in the bed that can be thrown. The trailer can even leave the road, losing control of the car. In 2024, I took the truck to the place where I bought it, Bomnin Chevrolet Dadeland, for a checkup. I explained all the symptoms to my advisor, just as I do here. I had to take it to wait for a loaner. A few days later, I took it back, and they had it for almost a week. When I picked it up, my advisor told me everything was fine. When I left the dealership, I found the same symptoms, so I went back and told him the car was still doing the same thing, and he told me it was normal. After much insistence, he got in the car with me to show him the problem, and the car did it several times, but according to him, it was normal. Now, in 2025, a week ago I took it to Miami Lakes Auto Mall to get checked out with the same symptoms and explanation. I started investigating why that couldn't possibly be normal car operation. They found they had to replace the torque converter and valve body because they found an excessive amount of metal in the transmission. The valve body is on back order indefinitely at all dealerships, so I had to take the car in that condition. Before taking it, I spoke with the manager and GM to ask them to give me a car until they fixed mine because it wasn't right for me to drive the car like that. But they didn't offer me anything. I took it back to Bomnin Chevrolet Dadeland and they told me they were going to change the transmission and torque converter and conveniently they didn't have to change the valve.

I was in stop and go traffic, the truck engine turned off I could not get it to crank. I was stuck in the middle of a busy road for at least an hour until the tow truck driver got there. Since the truck has electric shifting for the transmission, I could not get the truck into neutral to at-least push it to a safe place. I was informed by the dealership that there is no neutral override unless the vehicle is running. The shifting and fuel system “fuel module” failure is a know problem from GM and need to be recalled. If this would have happened on the interstate I don’t think the outcome would be great. The truck is a little over 1 year old and has under 15,000 miles. Very dangerous situation.

The vehicle check engine light came on and a message displayed "Reduced acceleration. Drive with care." If I tried to push the gas pedal more than halfway, I would lose both speed and power. I could not maintain my highway speed very well and could only accelerate if I slightly pressed the gas pedal. This is a serious safety concern because it may cause an accident if I am not able to maintain speed on the freeway. Additionally, this is of concern because I rely on my vehicle to pull a camper, and with this condition, I would be a "sitting duck" with my family in the vehicle. GM continues to diagnosis the issue but has failed to respond in a timeline and satisfactory manner.

At approximately 9k mi the engine performance (2.7L MAX Turbo) started to become intermittent. I always record the fuel milage, and always drive the same way, to/from work. NOTE: Displayed mpg calculates within 1% of actual. We can assume the driving habits are identical each time. While driving on the same tank of fuel for a week at a time: one day heading to work the indicated mpg might be 17 mpg. Driving home, about 10 minutes into the drive, it might increase 25 mpg. The following day it could be the same 17/25 mpg or it might be 25/17. The weather is somewhat dependent, whereas around =<43F the 17 mpg is almost a guarantee. While the indicated lower mpg is displayed, a direct lack of engine power is noticeable. The accelerator is dangerously non-responsive, all the while of pressing the pedal >3/4 to the floor. There is also no downshifting from the transmission whatsoever. To make the engine respond to change, the accelerator must be fully pressed to the floor, forcing the transmission into a lower gear and causing the engine to 'wake up'. When the mpg is above 20 or 21 mpg, (and temperatures >50F) the engine performs normally, where gradual accelerations to the pedal increase the engine speeds and down shift as expected. I have contacted GM through the 'MyCheverlot' app a couple of times, and have taken the truck to the dealer twice for this. Both times from the dealer it was stated that since the engine light was not on and no codes were stored, there was nothing that could be done. The dealer installed a software update and sent me on my way. Lastly, the 4WD is now making a grinding/rubbing noise, since the software update and overcomes the engine power while making turns from a stopped position. If no acceleration is applied, the truck will come to a rapid complete stop if rolling <10 mph. Truck is a LEMON!!

We purchased a new 2023 Chevy Silverado in approximately January 2023. The onset of the problems with the new truck was Friday, August 4, 2023. The engine light came on, skipping occurred when accelerating - powertrain issues. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated and was jerking when shifting between the first and second gear. No warning lights were illuminated. Then after arriving home, the truck cut off and I attempted to re-start the car without success. Waited for some time to start the truck, but it would not start. Attempted to start again after several hours. Did not start until the next morning and was able to drive the vehicle to the Chevy dealership service department, The service department kept the vehicle from August 4, 2023, to August 10, 2023. We were not provided with another vehicle, while they worked on mine. The second time occurred 10 days after picking the vehicle up from the service department. Monday, August 21, 2023, to PRESENT. Same issues with the truck continued. This issue has caused a major inconvenience. Not only are we still making payments on the vehicle. We have not been given a date of when the vehicle issue will be resolved. The parts needed are on back order. The truck has been in the dealership service department for 22 days as of 09/05/23.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001.  This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. General Motors (GM) issued Recall 25V-274 to address concerns of engine failure in the L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issue. GM’s recall remedy for Recall 25V-274 consisted of two different repairs, either an oil viscosity change or an engine replacement, based on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. ODI continues to receive reports of engine failures after the completion of the recall remedy. To date, ODI has received 499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V-274, 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. Additionally, ODI has received 191 reports of L87 engine failures in engines produced after the production period cited in Recall 25V-274. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysisto continue investigating complaints of post-remedy engine failure. PE25001 · Loss Of Motive Power Due To Engine Failure

On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007).
