I WAS DRIVING MY 2015 CHEVY COLORADO WESTBOUND ON CA HIGHWAY 92 AT APPROXIMATELY 10 AM ON FEB 15 PAST THE ON/OFF RAMPS TO/FROM EL CAMINO REAL WHEN THERE AN ALARM ON MY DASH CONSOLE AND I EXPERIENCED SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER TO THE POWER STREERING. THE STEERING BECAME VERY SLUGGISH AND DIFFICULT TO STEER. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND DRIVE THE TRUCK SLOWLY TO MY LOCAL DEALER SERVICE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING WAS CONFIRMED AND THE REPAIR BILL WAS FOR A LITTLE OVER $2500. WHILE THE LOCATION AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS WHERE THIS HAPPENED WERE SUCH THAT I WAS ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, I KNOW OF FEW ROADS WHERE THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER CAR OR COLLISION ON ROADWAY.

ON 1/14/20 I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE MY POWER STEERING LOCKED UP AND "SERVICE POWER STEERING" APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. LUCKILY I WAS IN THE RIGHT-HAND LANE WHEN THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE MY WHEEL WAS SO LOCKED UP I WAS UNABLE TO SWITCH LANES SAFELY. WHEN I GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY I TURNED MY TRUCK OFF AND RESTARTED IT. AT THIS TIME EVERYTHING WENT BACK TO NORMAL, THOUGH I CALLED PREMIER CHEVY IN BUENA PARK AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE TRUCK IN IMMEDIATELY. THE FOLLOWING MORNING I BROUGHT THE TRUCK INTO PREMIER CHEVY IN BUENA PARK AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FAULTY BATTERY. HE STATED THAT THE OTHER POSSIBILITY WAS THE STEERING GEARBOX BUT HE HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING WHICH WAS THE ISSUE SO HE SUGGESTED WE GET BOTH REPLACED. I DECIDED TO WAIT ON THOSE REPAIRS BECAUSE THE COST EXCEEDED $2K AND I DO NOT HAVE THOSE KINDS OF FUNDS. ON 1/18/20 MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FROM FULLERTON CA TO SAN DIMAS CA. SHE WAS IN THE LEFT LANE WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN WHEN THE SAME DASHBOARD WARNING APPEARED. SHE HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE LEFT SHOULDER ON THE HIGHWAY TO ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE TRUCK BECAUSE SHE HAD VERY LIMITED MOBILITY. ON HER DRIVE, SHE HAD TO PULL OVER AND ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE TRUCK ON THE LEFT SHOULDER 3 TIMES. 1/20/20 WE WENT TO HER FAMILY'S MECHANIC TO GET THEIR DIAGNOSIS FOR FEAR GM WAS GIVING US THE INCORRECT INFORMATION. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS A FAULTY PART #84498587. AFTER DOING RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS SAME PART WAS RECALLED ON 1K 2015 CHEVY COLORADO TRUCKS. THAT SAME DAY WE WENT TO GLENDORA CHEVROLET WHERE THEY SAID OUR TRUCK WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. OUR TRUCK SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL AND BECAUSE IT WASN'T AND WE WERE SENT AWAY FROM CHEVY IN BUENA PARK MY WIFE ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY MULTIPLE TIMES. PLEASE HELP US!

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering:electric Power Assist System
In May 2019 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ19-001) to assess the scope of General Motors (GM) recall 16V-054. ODI had received 50 complaints with allegations of loss of electric power steering assist while the vehicle was in motion. These complaints were for vehicles outside the scope of recall 16V-054 yet exhibited the same symptoms.ODI?s review focused on specific build months outside the recall scope that had a high electric power steering failure rate and failures that were the same or similar to those addressed by the remedy associated with recall 16V-054. ODI?s review of data supplied by GM confirmed a high failure rate for vehicles outside of the recall scope. On March 25, 2021, GM filed a defect information report recalling select 2015 Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon vehicles to remedy a potential loss of power steering assist while driving. The recall (21V-213) includes vehicles that were not addressed by recall 16V-054 and also prompted this recall query. In view of the recall, ODI is closing this recall query. Despite closing this investigation, NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers in a separate attachment. ?
