ON SATURDAY MORNING 8/24/13 I GOT INTO MY CAR AND BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. ONCE I BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE THE CAR STARTED TO JERK. I KEPT DRIVING FOR ABOUT ANOTHER 50 FEET TO A STOP SIGN. IT JERKED TO WHOLE WAY TO THE STOP SIGN. THERE I MADE A U TURN TO GO BACK HOME TO GET MY FATHER. HE GOT IN THE CAR AND WE DROVE BACK TO THE SAME CORNER AND ONCE AGAIN IT JERKED THE WHOLE WAY TO THE STOP SIGN. SO WE WENT BACK TO THE HOUSE SO MY DAD COULD GET SOME HIS SHOES ON SO WE COULD TAKE IT TO WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR. WHILE HE WAS IN THE HOUSE I TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN MY DAD GOT BACK IN THE CAR AND I TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND DROVE TO THE SIGN THE JERKING HAD WENT AWAY. I DROVE THE CAR THE REST OF THE DAY AND PUT AROUND 75 MILES ON IT THAT DAY WITH NO OTHER PROBLEMS. ON SUNDAY NIGHT 8/25/13 I GOT INTO MY CAR TO DRIVE INTO TOWN. I DROVE ABOUT BLOCK AND THE CAR BEGAN TO JERK AND SHAKE AGAIN. I DROVE ABOUT ANOTHER BLOCK AND PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT. ONCE I STOPPED I NOTICED THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD HAD COME ON. I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND SIT THERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE TURNED IT BACK ON AND DROVE IN TOWN WITH NO PROBLEMS THE REST OF THE NIGHT. ON MONDAY 8/26/13 I DROVE THE CAR 30 MILES BACK TO WHERE I BOUGHT IT WITH NO PROBLEMS. THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN TRYING TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM NOW FOR 3 DAY WITH NO SUCCESS. *TT

THE SPEEDOMETER AND RPM GAUGES START GOING CRAZY. THE RADIO WILL ALSO GO IN AND OUT. USUALLY ON THE INTERSTATE, THE CAR WILL CONTINUE TO DRIVE, WHICH IS VERY SCARY. BUT IF I AM IN TOWN OR SLOWING DOWN TO STOP, THE CAR WILL CUT OFF. THEN AFTER I CRANK IT AGAIN AND START TO MOVE, THE TRANSMISSION CHANGES GEARS REALLY ROUGH AND FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO FALL OUT. THE ONLY THING I HAVE FOUND TO FIX THIS (AFTER WEEKS AT DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS) IS TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND FLIP THE KEY ON AND OFF SEVERAL(20 PLUS) TIMES. *TR

THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE SINCE I'VE GOTTEN MY CAR. LUCKILY, I WAS IN PLACES WHERE I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER. I HAD TO TURN MY CAR OFF, WAIT FOR A FEW MINUTES AND TURN IT BACK ON TO GET IT TO WORK CORRECTLY. I AM ALSO HAVING ISSUES WITH MY POWER STEERING. I AM STARTING TO THINK THAT THIS CAR JUST ISN'T SAFE ANYMORE AND I AM LOOKING INTO POSSIBLY GETTING A NEW CAR BECAUSE OF IT. IT IS BECOMING DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THIS CAR! *TR

AT TIMES THE GAS PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE, THEN VEHICLE WOULD LURCH FORWARD - HAD A NEAR MISS INCIDENT WHEN THE LOSS OF POWER ON ACCELERATION FROM A RED LIGHT ALMOST CAUSED ANOTHER VEHICLE TO HIT US. ISSUE HAS OCCURRED AT RANDOM INTERVALS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW, BUT HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT LATELY AND TENDS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN ON HOT DAYS. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE CONCERN, DESPITE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET. *TR

I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER A TOTAL OF 8 TIMES. EARLY ON WHEN THE CAR WAS YOUNGER IT WOULD SEEM TO BE REPAIRED ONLY DO START THIS PROBLEM AGAIN A YEAR LATER. NOW THAT THE CAR IS OLDER AND NOT UNDER WARRANTY I HAVE QUIT TAKING IT AS I DO NOT BELIEVE IT WILL HELP. THEY DO NOT SEEM TO KNOW HOW TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THEY ARE RUDE TO ME. *TR

LOUD CLICKING SOUNDS CAN BE HEARD COMING FROM THE SHIFT SELECTOR. THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT TURN DUE TO LOSS OF POWER STEERING. AFTER SHUTTING OFF VEHICLE, THE IGNITION WILL NOT RELEASE KEYS FOR ABOUT 15-20 SECONDS. HAVE ALSO LOST POWER STEERING ON FREEWAY AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH. HAVE ATTEMPTED TO HAVE GM AND THE DEALERSHIP RESOLVE THE ISSUE, FIRST BY HAVING THE RECALLED PARTS REPLACED. PROBLEM IS RECURRING FOR THIRD TIME, AFTER BEING "HANDLED" BY THE DEALERSHIP THE LAST TWO TIMES. A VERY DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING PROBLEM. *TR

FOR NO APPARENT REASON AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING (NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR ANYTHING), I RECEIVED AN "ENGINE POWER REDUCED" WARNING AND MY CAR'S ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS COMPLETING A TURN IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO SAFETY AND PARK IN A NEARBY PARKING LOT. THE CAR REFUSED TO TURN BACK ON FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. ONCE IT DID, I DROVE MY CAR TO MY OFFICE AND WAS ABLE TO START IT AND DRIVE IT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. THEN, WITHOUT WARNING IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND HAS BEEN HAPPENING INTERMITTENTLY SINCE THEN. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY CLAIMED THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM, BUT I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND REPORTS FROM OTHER OWNERS ONLINE, SO I'M NOT CONVINCED OF THEIR HONESTY OR CONCERN REGARDING THIS MATTER. THEY SAY THEY *THINK* THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE THE MASTER COMPUTER OR AT LEAST THAT IS THEIR "BEST GUESS" (THEIR WORDS, NOT MINE). I WILL BE REPLACING IT LATER THIS WEEK. UNFORTUNATELY, I'M NOT CONFIDENT THE REPAIR WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. AFTER GM'S REPEATED AND EXPLICIT DENIAL OF THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM AND HOW LONG IT TOOK THEM TO ADMIT THERE EVEN WAS ONE, I HAVE DECIDED TO APPEAL TO YOU. AT PRESENT, WHEN DRIVING THIS CAR, I AM A DANGER TO MYSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO MIGHT BE AROUND ME ON THE ROAD...AS ARE ALL OTHER COBALT DRIVERS. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER BEFORE SOMEONE HAS THIS HAPPEN AT THE WRONG PLACE AND THE WRONG TIME AND SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT, OR WORSE. GM KNOWS IT CREATED A CAR WITH A FAULTY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WHICH COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC FAILURES AND THEY NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT AND FIX IT. JUST BECAUSE THEY STOPPED MAKING THE CAR, DOES NOT ABSOLVE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THEM SAFE FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD. *TR

Official recalls
5Apr 10, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.
